Not being a mod and generally unconcerned because the existing mods seemed to have been doing a decent job, I don't really know what goes on.

This opened my eyes:

While I was sleeping they deleted "The beginning of the end" topic...

I deleted the thread which was my first instinct upon reading it anyway. It was trolling and off topic. I even checked with the forum administrator and he agreed although he suggested I could have moved it to off topic instead.

What you posted was facts that most of us already knew and then you made a conclusion for which you had no supporting evidence. I'm sorry but that's trolling and does not belong into the Bitcoin Discussion.

Why delete?   Off-Topic if you must, but definitely not delete!

Sure, this is a private forum and sure BitcoinTalk has the right to administer it however it chooses.

But deleting threads simply because "we already know the facts", "no supporting evidence", "trolling", etc, then BitcoinTalk no longer remains the forum I wish to participate in.

I know manually logging actions is a pain in the ass, but can't there be an automated method to see which posts are deleted and by whom?

The only piece of data that I don't know if it is available is the "reason".  If the mod has to enter a reason, then that should be reported as well.

But when deletions don't just subtly disappear then that transparency makes mods think twice about deleting threads.

Is there agreement that this log would be useful?  Is such a log technically already possible?

I restored that topic to off-topic. I was on the fence about it, but allowed it to stay deleted because it has no real substance and the author often seems to be trolling.

A list of post removals isn't difficult. I'll write it later.

Here's a basic log of the last 14 days of deletions:
https://bitcointalk.org/modlog.php

The "by member #x" part of these entries isn't usually correct for log entries made before now. SMF has a bug which I just fixed.

I don't want to list the moderators who deleted things.

Lol yeah, that's mine, got tired of seeing so many pyramining threads bumped constantly with (mostly) the same users spamming referral links. I tried warning/talking to them but it didn't help.

Wow ... I had no idea there was so much crap that needed to be culled from the forum.  I'ld like to take this opportunity to express to the mods my gratitude for taking on this task!

You deleted a post by satoshi? What could GOD possibly have posted that needed deleting?

•Delete reply: Re: Welcome to the new Bitcoin forum! in topic #5 by member #3

I doubt theymos did it. One of his rules for Moderators is not to touch Satoshi's posts.
Maybe some Moderator that didn't read the rules. Grin

Dear forum admins, as you probably know, usagi deleted mots of his posts (over thousand?) and left only about 150 or so intact.
Most of the crap I do not really care for but all the stuff under Securities subforum, where he solicited for investments, are gone and this is not good at all.
Can you restore those?

Cheers!

Is that log showing posts deleted by just moderators or posts which are self deleted as well? I am wondering because looking through that there is stuff like:

Delete reply: Re: Starfish BCB - Loans and Deposits in topic #61262 by member #44476

Which shows posts being removed from a long lasting thread where the creator of it just got the scammer tag and then one of his posts and a bunch of posts of others were deleted from it in rapid succession. I am wondering if this was an action of a moderator or of the users themselves. I have been noticing posts quoting people up for scammer tags have disappeared before and because there is no trace of the deleted posts it's hard to figure out completely.

I went to read the last few pages of that thread when the Scammer accusation thread was made to see if there was anything there, and cleaned up some of the troll/ot posts at the same time cause I figured others would be doing the same thing. There was one referring to another users lady parts, a couple AAA++ WOULD INVEST AGAIN LOL, and Patrick responded to one of them with a random comment. Useless stuff.

And even more ASIC stuff. One has to wonder what that is about.

I cleaned up and warned people over a bunch of off-topic posts in the various ASIC threads awhile back.

"Fuck you" big font

This was the report email I got.  It proved to be accurate, entire thread was a profanity filled rant.  Zero redeeming content.

"The powers of financial capitalism had another far-reaching aim, nothing less than to create a world system of financial control in private hands able to dominate the political system of each country and the economy of the world as a whole. This system was to be controlled in a feudalist fashion by the central banks of the world acting in concert, by secret agreements arrived at in frequent meetings and conferences. The apex of the systems was to be the Bank for International Settlements in Basel, Switzerland, a private bank owned and controlled by the world's central banks which were themselves private corporations. Each central bank...sought to dominate its government by its ability to control Treasury loans, to manipulate foreign exchanges, to influence the level of economic activity in the country, and to influence cooperative politicians by subsequent economic rewards in the business world."

- Carroll Quigley, CFR member, mentor to Bill Clinton, from 'Tragedy And Hope'
