Is it possible to retrieve the balance of a Bitcoin address and display it in a forum post (as a picture, say)? And it would need to automatically update itself...

Cheers!

There is an actual solution.
It was designed and published in a previous post here:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=42005.0

You can show a realtime balance of an address, show the blockcount, or show any other text.

EDIT: You can embed the code into email signatures, blogs, forums and normal HTML code. It can update in realtime and show balances from any address. You can customise the string to change colour, font size and background. It comes out as an embedded image  Grin

Did I help? Please donate :-)

Don't you think that the man who created and is hosting the service is more worthy of a donation than you?

I don't really mind. It's a great service but the OP could not find it originally as it was an old post.

That is awesome! You can use their site to display the balance on any address, without showing the pig if you want to. Like so:

Code:
http://bitcoinbox.ru/display/graph.php?btcaddress=1NgLdhjHfLbcVawMk4DNEv8yf9ZzzNJV6U

Shows up like this when used in an img tag:

(That's my sig donation address) The only thing is, it seems to tabulate the total received amount, without considering sent amounts, so it isn't a true "balance".
And no, that isn't the amount of donations I have gotten, that address has also been used for other things.

It displays the amount recieved by the address
To display the balance, just add the parameter &type=balance
like this:
Code:
http://bitcoinbox.ru/display/graph.php?btcaddress=1NgLdhjHfLbcVawMk4DNEv8yf9ZzzNJV6U&type=balance
