Wow! Where's my bubble? Amazing news and great video, the "borg vibe" in it really catched me. I'm so excited to see what they are planning! I'm pretty sure Paypal and Coinbase/Bitpay worked together recently, I'd bet they are about to buy one or the other.

Think they are going to integrate it soon. Maybe their advert department has been told to include it from now on but the platform department hasnt yet got things sorted. Amazing news imo

Agree integration is probably not ready yet. I do think it's worth noting that Apple is supposedly going to make a (fiat) wallet announcement tomorrow. Maybe this video was intended as a way of interrupting that, or at least firing a warning shot. Or maybe I am reading too much into it.

They have no choice. They can reject bitcoin and die, or embrace it and survive. It's ALWAYS better to cannibalize your own profits than to have some competitor do it for you. Blockbuster failed to learn that lesson in time. Looks like Paypal doesn't want to make the same mistake.

Seems silly to be advertising bitcoin before they've even got something in place. I also think it'll be a while before bitcoin is at the point where it's a threat to them, though I hope that does come sooner rather than later.

It's probably the beginning of a very carefully planned Public Relations / ad campaign wherein Paypal tries to maneuver themselves into the position of "trusted bitcoin service". They have hungry eyes on Coinbase / Bitpay's marketshare I'm sure.

It's in Paypal's channel, plus the ad is professional, still nothing about this ad on Paypal's blog so they might be waiting for keynote to make a big announcement. Keynote in less than 40 minutes.

it's been almost a year of "to the moon!" without going to the moon. we've had a lot of good news and it hasn't really affected the price of bitcoin. the one time bitcoin went up a good deal was with the auction of ross ulbricht's coins, and that was inherently different from most of the good news we got this year (since it was about someone actually investing, not offering some service or acceptanceo f bitcoin). i'm going to hold my horses.
oh, and i find it strange that everyone is rejoicing when practically the entire forum here hates the living shit out of paypal.

Bear in mind, however, that Paypal does and will continue to have competitors in the market. Sooner or later, this competition will ultimately force them to reduce fees or be driven out of business, just as it is forcing them to adopt Bitcoin now.

oh, and i find it strange that everyone is rejoicing when practically the entire forum here hates the living shit out of paypal.
Mass acceptance/adoption is, generally speaking, what Bitcoin advocates want. Everyone uses PayPal*. Accepting Bitcoin provides legitimacy and, effectively, free advertising. Ultimately new-to-Bitcoin PayPal users will learn that they can use Bitcoin without PayPal. Besides, most of the PayPal horror stories involve sellers. For consumers using PayPal, it's a different story. So as a consumer, why not have a PayPal account with a "legit" Bitcoin wallet built in for your "legit" bitcoins? It would be the first of its kind: a wallet seamlessly integrated almost everywhere that lets you choose between funding transactions from your bank account, debit and credit cards and Bitcoin balance. *152 million registered users in 203 markets, at least according to PayPal.

Mass acceptance/adoption is, generally speaking, what Bitcoin advocates want. Everyone uses PayPal. Exactly, Network Effect, value increases if userbase increases, and we also like speculative bubbles.

Even if they do start accepting it I cannot bring myself to trust paypal. They are a bit of a poster child for the problems with the current system. For my business the core QT wallet and keeping an amount equal to my inventory in escrow gets the job done just fine.

Speculative bubble price correction, if late 2013 bubble hadn't happened you would just see price increasing slowly over time. bitcoin has never worked like that, so i have no idea how you got to that conclusion. it's always been a meteoric boom or bust for bitcoin. i've never seen bitcoin "gradually increase over time." i've only seen it multiply 10 fold within a short span, and then stabilize for a while until the same thing happens again.

Yeap, building into their Braintree software (i.e. the one used by Uber, Airbnb, Dropbox, etc). “This is PayPal making a move to embrace Bitcoin,” Ready said, pointing out that Braintree is the go-to developer platform for PayPal. http://techcrunch.com/2014/09/08/paypal-braintree/

Do you all feel that this really is any different from, say, Shopify "adding bitcoin" as an "option" for their thousands of customers? I don't want to be pessimistic, but all this adds is the option "for those who want to use Bitcoin". Its not like "Paypal is using Bitcoin" as part of its business model. Technically. Thoughts?

Finally great news, of course! Ready says that PayPal is partnering with Coinbase to enable a Bitcoin-based payment system. " This would be PayPal's first foray into Bitcoin" he said. " But it's via the Braintree platform." That service is still in the works, he says, and it won't be handled exclusively through PayPal -- merchants interested in using the emerging system will need a Coinbase wallet to accept payments. Of course, PayPal just gave hundreds of bitcoiners an erection Announcement: http://blog.coinbase.com/post/96987622472/braintree-partners-with-coinbase-to-accept-bitcoin

Paypal implementing BTC would be a huge step for BTC because it would be an added layer of security for Buyers who are paying in BTC. As of right now, buyers (paying in BTC), have to rely heavily on the seller's reputation, and/or escrow to make sure they are protected once they make a BTC payment.
If Paypal brings on BTC, it will give that same security for buyers that it does for sellers. Paypal + BTC would be a nice transaction.

Remember the old eGold company in the early 2000s? PayPal accepted eGold back then. After a little while, PayPal started suspending accounts of people who had eGold accounts. Lots of eGold users simply lost their money that they had in PayPal. eGold was a centralized ecurrency money transfer company. It was something similar to Bitcoin except that it was centralized. The feds took it down like they took Liberty Reserve down under claims of money laundering. They would take Bitcoin down, but they can't without taking the whole world down. They are trying to do this. The little point is, I wouldn't really trust PayPal for any more than tiny amounts of money that wouldn't harm me if I lost them. The big point is, personally I think that PayPal is a government "stooge" company. I don't trust them. I just queried egold.com. eGold is completely gone.

This comment summarizes it all => https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pF7HxLCFMeY&google_comment_id=z12dyryjkl2czlchd04cgfsjmvy1epir1e4 A rat fleeing a sinking ship, an attempt to incorporate revolutionary innovation (Bitcoin) into a failing system. Hear me out Paypal: crypto-currencies don't need you. We have our wallet software and own blockchains, we no longer need a babysitter to hold our money for us. We don't trust you because you've been pandering to the power structure and the fiat overlords for long years.
Have a nice shunning, it will be awry for you.

have you read the thread? havent you seen that braintree (paypal company) is accepting bitcoin yes i have read the whole thread Braintree is another Ebay subsidiary this thread is about paypal, stories are saying Paypal aquired Braintree but I think Ebay is planning on merging them, these stories are less than a year old so probably not too much has happened with their company structures yet, be best to ask some of the media reps from the respective companies to get the finer details, http://techcrunch.com/2013/09/26/paypal-acquires-payments-gateway-braintree-for-800m-in-cash/ http://techcrunch.com/2014/09/08/paypal-braintree/ok so the Braintree story is brand new as well about them accepting bitcoin so you can see with the two company structures overlapping this is why Paypal has released a video endorsing Bitcoin. Braintree is partnering with www.ycombinator.com/ a startup manager and Coinbase in helping implementing a one touch payment system, Neither Paypal, Braintree or Coinbase is a startup so they could possibly be spinning of another company, maybe their own Bitcoin wallet software company which will help implement the software into the one touch system.

It seems PayPal is now build upon the BrainTree architecture. Meaning, PayPal internally now supports bitcoin to some degree. What I would like to see is bitcoin supported as a currency, in addition to as a protocol. This will cause downward pressure as liquidity increases.

Price rises don't appear in just 30 minutes or 1 hour. Now the cards are on the table. Now, tomorrow or someday people is going to get interested in Bitcoin, don't be nervous guys. Project is strong and community is there what we have to do is move our Bitcoins and spread it to our friends! Simple donations to let them know how it works, help!

Still waiting on that rise tho......
In bitcoin land things happen with 3 months delay. And actually nothing really happened. It was just an advertisement, that is all.

I think this is a great thing. Bitcoin needs more legitimate (yes, PayPal has done evil things I know) companies that protect customers. They can for example act as a Bitcoin escrow service for a small fee!

I should have gotten into Bitcoin back in 1992...

People like to bash Paypal, but the fact of the matter is that many online marketplaces like Ebay will not function well without a third party intermediary that provides both the buyer and seller protection.
Paypal accepting BTC is a great step toward mainstream adoption!

Wtf... those faces and that voice, makes it so hard to focus on what they're actually saying.
There will be a 100% chance paypal will still rape you with fees for using their built in bitcoin feature..

They're obviously going to take a fee just like any payment processor but regardless of their cut it's still huge news. Hopefully they'll charge a fee less than what they currently do for fiat payments.

I'm starting to think that the more adoption of btc by merchants, the more it will HURT price of bitcoin.

Care to elaborate on why you think that is because I don't see how it can possibly be logical. More merchants = more demmand.

This is great news for the average person and business who wants to utilize Bitcoin, but is not familiar with the infrastructure. He can now use a system that is already familiar to him! This is great news!

Care to elaborate on why you think that is because I don't see how it can possibly be logical. More merchants = more demand. Depends on the implementation. If all they do is take bitcoin, and convert it to USD to sit it paypal accounts, Xiaoxiao is absolutely correct. If they make it easier to get and hold BTC, the price will rise. This is all short term. Long term it is certainly positive.

The whole video seemed dedicated to Bitcoin
"We have magical money. Not bound by bank or bill. It's instant, simple, and secure enough to get out on the way. Consider yourself invited to the people economy." etc
I have a feeling Coinbase and PayPal have been working together recently..
