Title: Electrum was unable to parse your transaction
Post by: mega2005 on March 26, 2015, 03:11:50 PM
Just getting started with Bitcoin and trying to play around with all the tools to get a better feel for everything. One big step obviously is understanding how to use Cold Storage. So today I got Electrum setup on an offline computer (an old ThinkPad running Xubuntu 14.04) and the online one on a Mac running OSX 10.10.

I managed to send funds from a coinbase account (just a bit as a test amount) and it's showing on my online Electrum. I wanted to try and send it back to coinbase to try out sending funds so after the receiving transaction was approved on the online wallet I went through the process of sending from Electrum. I exported the file, moved to a USB, copied the transaction file to the desktop of the offline wallet computer but then when I wanted to load the transaction (from file) I got the error message: "Electrum was unable to parse your transaction".

As a possibly related question (maybe this is what is causing the error), how do you get received funds to show on the offline wallet? Is there someway that the two sync or is the offline wallet really just a way to sign and verify the transactions?

Sorry if these are noob questions, but I've spent all afternoon and evening trying to search for answers to these problems and haven't found anything anywhere. So hopefully there'll be some answers here as getting my cold storage up and running is my last hurdle before getting more invested in BTC.  ;D

Thanks!

you need to install version >= 2.0 on both computers.
version 1.9.8 will not parse transactions created with 2.0

Thomas, do you know any bootable linux distribution which provide electrum with a recent version (>= 2.0) ?
I used trisquel, but embedded version is 1.9.8.

Start with a fresh Xubuntu 14.04 installation
Install the latest Electrum version from the Electrum homepage.

Go offline.

Enter your seed and don't go online again.

If you boot from a CD you could reinstall it every time fresh.
If your live distribution is on a USB flash drive then install it the first time.

The key is that you can go online and do whatever installation you need as long the seed has not yet been entered.
Once you have entered the seed you mustn't go online again until you turn off the computer and have removed the live distribution media.

It seems I have difficulties to be understood. So i will try to ask in a very simple way.

Do you know a bootable linux distribution with electrum (>= 2.0) embedded ?

No, I do not know of such a distribution. <-- There. Happy?

What you don't understand is that you do not need such a distribution because you can create your own "distribution" with Electrum >= 2.0 installed by following the steps I described.

Or you could also take a look at the Ubuntu Live CD Customization (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCDCustomization) instructions.

Good news.
KNOPPIX 7.6.0 (http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/knoppix760-en.html) has the latest Electrum Version 2.5.4 in the distribution and can be used as live DVD.

I believe TAILS also includes an up to date version.
