Title: Boko Haram HQ Gwoza in Nigeria 'retaken'
Post by: redsn0w on March 27, 2015, 05:25:57 PM
The Nigerian army says it has retaken the north-eastern town of Gwoza, believed to be the headquarters of militant Islamist group Boko Haram.
The insurgents had now been driven from virtually all the territory they had held, it said. Some militants were now fleeing towards border areas, the military said. News of Gwoza's recapture comes a day before presidential elections, which were postponed by six weeks because of the offensive against Boko Haram. Meanwhile, the president of Chad, which is helping Nigeria fight Boko Haram, has strongly criticised Nigeria's military.
Thousands of people have been killed since 2009, when the group began its insurgency to create an Islamic state. An estimated three million people have fled their homes because of the unrest, and many may be unable to vote.

I hope the nigerian army will destroy those terrorists, they are the ruin of the humanity and obviously not muslims.

The timing is interesting. No one can independently verify the army's claims atm, and there is an election just a few days away. I hope the claims are accurate and not politically motivated.

Any taking of terrorist resources is a good thing in my book.  Destroy them and leave nothing left, adn this goes for ISIS as well.  Although it seems that ISIS is doing much better in defending themselves.

Not surprising because they were given $500 million of american weaponry either directly or indirectly. It's not like the afghans lost the wars against america or russia so as long as you have adequate weapons and can use the land to your advantage, you can maintain. In this situation, it's great that the Nigerian army finally got their act together and starting taking on these bastards. It's about time as it is. Too bad so many have been hurt before this election came to be.

Under the watchful gaze of heavily armed troops, thousands of Nigerians cast their ballots in the northeast, braving threats by Boko Haram to bomb polling stations and shoot voters.

By Saturday afternoon, suspected gunmen from the armed group had killed 14 voters, including an opposition politician, in three separate assaults on polling stations in the northeast, Reuters news agency reported.
In the regional capital Maiduguri, military helicopters hovered above voters waiting in line.

The election was originally scheduled for February 14 but was postponed at the last minute by six weeks, officially because of the security threat in the northeast, where Boko Haram until recently controlled territory the size of Belgium.
Since then a concerted military offensive involving neighbouring Chad, Cameroon and Niger has helped recapture most occupied towns

Taking their bases will do no good. The Boko Haram leadership is more inclined towards waging guerilla warfare, than engaging their enemies in a conventional war. They will just retreat to their hide-outs near Lake Chad and launch attacks from there.

Agree. As soon as the army moving away they will be back.

Reports reaching PREMIUM TIMES indicate that members of the insurgent Boko Haram are currently attacking Kayamla village of Borno.
Kayamla is about 20km from Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, and the attack was ongoing at 2:10 p.m. An official of the local vigilante called Civilian-JTF in Borno, Muhammed Gava, confirmed the attack to PREMIUM TIMES.

“We just got a report from our vigilante members around Konduga local government area that Boko Haram terrorists were in Kayamla and we’ve just assembled a team of vigilante members and the Civilian-JTF who are about to storm Kayamla now,” he said. Kayamla was last attacked by the Boko Haram in January last year.

I hate those person, why should they attack "innocent" people in name of a God (Allah)? This is not right, and it is obviously insane.

I don't know whether the advantage which the Nigerian army currently possess in its fight against Boko Haram can be maintained. They depend a lot on Boer mercenaries from South Africa and other contract soldiers from Russia and Ukraine. A few hundred of them are fighting in Borno. Once they are gone, Boko Haram will come back in to the picture.

If the Army was capable of taking such action then why they were waiting for so long? So many people got killed, abducted & so many other atrocities were carried out by this Boko Haram!

The Nigerian army is not capable of defeating the Boko Haram. That is why they recruited apartheid-era South Africans and mercenaries from the former Soviet Union. According to the field reports, most of the direct fighting in Borno is carried out by the foreign mercenaries, while the local soldiers act as backup.

Leaders of central and west African states will hold a summit on April 8 to try to draw up a joint strategy against the threat posed by Nigeria’s Boko Haram militants, a statement from organisers said Sunday.

It will be the first meeting of its kind since Nigeria’s election a week ago which was won by Muhammadu Buhari, a former military leader who has vowed to rid his country of the “terror” of Boko Haram.
A regional coalition involving troops from Nigeria, Chad, Niger and Cameroon has been waging offensives against the Islamists in a bid to crush the insurgency, which has now spread across borders from Boko Haram’s stronghold in Nigeria.

The meeting in Malabo, capital of Equatorial Guinea, is being jointly organised by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS).
