Title: Bitcointalk down
Post by: botany on April 02, 2015, 12:18:01 PM
Bitcointalk was down for the last few hours.....
Hopefully, nothing to do with avatars being enabled again.  ;D

DDOS. I don't think it's anything to do with the avatars. Probably expect this to continue to happen throughout today.

Saw a few worrying statements on reddit.

Any truth in this? Can any hero or legendary members confirm of deny any truth in this?

Presumably this is aimed at mods here.

Well at first I thought that it's a problem with my ISP, then I looked and asked the guys at #bitcoin in freenode then they directed me to bitcointalk's twitter handle. It is then that I knew that there is a DoS attack that had happened earlier. I thought the new forum software was released but, nah.

Ask him for facts, he probably won't be able to deliver. Probably has been banned before and trying to stir shit up. Unless he can provide hard facts that what he is claiming is true then ignore it. I've dealt with a few staff members and they have all been great. I think it's quite obvious that when you look at the likes of Salty who has dealt with large amount of transactions and gmaxwell who works on Bitcoin itself it's not hard to see that this guy is just throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks.

Idk if I should believe easily on those things, as I haven't seen the mods or even the admin here do such a thing. The $1.5m forum software payment bothers me though, and the fact that they are not planning to use the software for some revenues. Well, we'll see from the mods what are they're thoughts about that tweet.

Assuming it's the same supadupa, he's a well known scammer:  https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=575743.0

Don't believe everything you read on twitter ;)

Looked like a DDoS. Site was accessible for me but running extremely, extremely slow and without any formatting, just plain text. That's when I knew there was some kind of problem with the site. Seems to be resolved at the moment, for now at least.

I don't have twitter.
I was just reading the comments on @bitcointalk in response to them putting a tweet up about the DDOS attack.
I've only been on here since May 14 so can't comment on it myself.

I can confirm that this is actually true. In fact, being a scammer is one of the criteria to becoming a mod here. When theymos asked if I wanted to be a mod he also asked "are you a scammer?". I said "yes" and he said "that's exactly what we're looking for; welcome to the team".

Wow! Never knew that being a scammer is just one of the many requirements before you get to be a mod here on BTT. ;D ;D

Hmm...April 1 is already over and today is 2nd April.

I didn't realize April the 1st is the only day of the year you're allowed to make a joke.

I guess it has something to do with Avatars but I can see the other members have those "fool" avatars still and even I may have mine not changed.
It's unlikely. Has the avatar function would of probably been taken down as soon as they expected it to cause any problems. Regarding the fool avatars, it's probably because theymos is busy dealing with the DDOS that he hasn't changed them.

It seems that SupaDupa guy is a real scammer.
Why do people do it?

So disloyal & such a low thing to do.

@OP: I initially thought my internet was not working as many sites including this forum are not opening. Now I checked and it opened and can't get why was the forum down as I wasn't getting any 502 error or another error message. I guess it has something to do with Avatars but I can see the other members have those "fool" avatars still and even I may have mine not changed.

Well you still have that doge avatar.

Me too. At first I thought that there is a problem with my ISP, but I can easily load different other websites without even waiting for a full minute. i kept on thinking that there is indeed something wrong with my connection until I asked the guys at #bitcoin. They directed me to a tweet of bitcointalk's twitter handle then there it is, the forum is under attack.

Yep Obama's signed an executive order, jokes are only allowed on April 1st. Any attempt of humour outside of that day will result in rendition to Gitmo Bay.

I just checked Twitter which mentioned it was a DDos attack and so I deleted my post  :P

LOL! I know but what if scammers would take your post seriously and start sending their applications to theymos  :D Anyways, I enjoyed the joke  ;)

I was present when Obama signed the order coz  he considers me his child :D ROFL

Yeah my avatar has not changed and I also thought the same that it was attacked due to avatars like it happened earlier. It has been 10 hours since that tweet was made but I checked this forum just 3 hours back.

The forum was under a big DDoS attack.  theymos has long resisted the idea of protecting the forum with the most cost effective DDoS protection providers like Cloudflare because doing so hands the SSL private keys to a 3rd party company and increases the privacy risk of the users.  Instead he decided to try hosting at another provider with automatic DDoS mitigation where theymos continues to directly control the SSL certificate.  He will see how things go with this new host provider.

The changing of avatars was disabled due to a hack that exploited weaknesses in the security of avatars. Then when the uploading of avatars was reenabled the forum was DDoS'ed within hours of when the April fools joke regarding the avatars was suppose to expire, allowing avatars to work "properly".

It should be obvious as to what happened.

But Avatars are still enabled. I don't think this was the issue else Theymos would have again disabled it after the attack.

Though I've read that there had been some issues to the avatars back then (and it was one of the reasons why the admin disabled adding one) I still can't figure out why users link the re-enabling of avatars to the recent attack that had happened earlier. ???

Idk if they already found out who was responsible for the recent attack. Seems like the attack is kinda strong it lasted for several hours. :(

No. But I wonder whether DD4BTC is behind this attack. Lately this entity is extorting from various bitcoin sites and there is a bounty on this DDOS attacker.

As DDos attacks usually happen when a virus has been downloaded or uploaded to the websites but it's not always the case. Earlier it happened because someone uploaded a virus as an avatar which led to the Ddos attack I read about Ddos attacks here: http://www10.org/cdrom/papers/409/

Theymos managed to recover the forum from this attack pretty soon as I have seen cases where it takes weeks to recover if the attack is a big one.

So it means that the cause of the recent DDoS attack came from an uploaded avatar injected with virus? Correct me if I'm wrong because I'm not knowledgeable with such topics. Can you please elaborate further as to how avatars harm the forum and cause a DDoS. i'll also do my own research regarding what you have just said. :)

Why should mods make any kind of announcement? Please repeat with me:
