Title: Bytecoin Wallet (GUI)
Post by: Ullo on April 09, 2015, 04:26:11 PM
Today the Bytecoin team has released a fundamentally new GUI wallet, featuring modern design, intuitive interface, and high speed of operations in Bytecoin system. Bytecoin Wallet is available in versions for all major OS and allows new users to start working with Bytecoin swiftly.

Bytecoin Wallet is the second part of Bytecoin v.1.0.3 release. Earlier this week Bytecoin Reference Client has been updated to introduce new high and low-level API. These APIs give smart access to Bytecoin engine and allow third party developers to focus on building their own applications and services according to their business requirements.

Bytecoin Wallet and API libraries together represent an updated Bytecoin technology that allows both users and developers to shape and improve Bytecoin ecosystem, and take part in it in a simple and comfortable way.

Share your thoughts with us! We invite you to download and test Bytecoin Wallet. Your feedback is valuable for us and will affect usability and upcoming features.

Bytecoin Wallet: Overview

Dashboard

The Overview tab is the first thing you see when you launch Bytecoin Wallet. We've tried to make this screen both informative and simple. Overview is going to be updated with further releases when more Bytecon features are implemented. Its purpose is to provide you with a quick insight into your recent financial operations.

With Bytecoin Wallet release we've rethought the way we indicate the balance. We believe this to be more intuitive than it was originally implemented in simplewallet.

* Available balance is the funds that are available for transactions.
* Locked amount shows the funds that are not yet available (unconfirmed transactions, the coins you've mined, time-locked transaction)
* Total

This change has been implemented in simplewallet too.

Send Bytecoin

https://i.imgur.com/uh9Gi5H.png

With Bytecoin you are able to send money to various users with one transaction. You may add several recipients, but keep in mind that the transaction with a high number of addresses may get rejected due to being excessively large.

The way CryptoNote transactions are visualized in Bytecoin Wallet makes sending money simple and unambigious. What's more, the wallet provides you with exact feedback in case there might be something wrong with the transaction.

Please note that you are unable to send Bytecoin in case you're not synchronized with the network yet. The interface will get unlocked once your local blockchain is up-to-date.

Transactions screen hosts the story of your financial operations. You may filter the table, check transactions info or export all data in CSV.

Address book is a simple must-have for long CryptoNote addresses.

Important notes

First launch

Once you open Bytecoin Wallet, it will automatically create your first Bytecoin address and start synchronizing with the network.

Wallet encryption

It is highly recommended that you encrypt your new Bytecoin wallet with a password. Leaving the wallet unprotected makes it vulnerable in case your system is compromised.

To encrypt your wallet, choose "Settings" menu and then "Encrypt wallet".

Wallet file format

Unlike Bytecoin Reference Client, Bytecoin Wallet uses .wallet files instead of legacy .keys files to store your private keys for each wallet.

Bytecoin Wallet is able to import .keys files (with the existing password), but it will create a .wallet file for further operations.

Bytecoin Wallet files

Bytecoin Wallet introduces several new files stored in the standard Bytecoin folder:

Windows: C:\Users\%user_name%\AppData\Roaming\bytecoin\
OSX/Linux: ~/.bytecoin/

The most commonly used files are the following:

1. bytecoinwallet.wallet – a default wallet keys file that is created on first startup of Bytecoin wallet and gives access to your fresh Bytecoin address.

2. bytecoinwallet.log – a log file for the node that is running inside Bytecoin Wallet.

I am very glad that Bytecoin now finally has graphic wallet! Looking at screenshots, Bytecoin Wallet is one of the best cryptocurrency wallets I've seen. I'll test it right now to say more.

By the way, are there plans for mobile wallet? My phone and tablet is on last Android, and I don't use desktop pc much. It should be possible to use Bytecoin on other devices.

You should refer to our roadmap to check our closest plans: http://bytecoin.org/roadmap/
We believe there are other high priority features before we go for mobile platforms.

Personally, I believe that localization is more about mass adoption, which is going to be an issue later on. We're going to localize it for sure, but not in the next versions.

i don't see this function in the wallet, but i want it to be there. bytecoin gui miner would be so damn cool  8)
if there is no mining feature in the bytecoin wallet now, bcn devs, do you plan to add it in the future? i think it is very very good to have "start mining now!" button in the wallet near the balance dashboard.

There is a lot to like in Byteconi Wallet. It runs out of box, it has clear interface, and I bet you've made a lot of effort in trying to polish every usability aspect. I like that it's responsive and unambigous.

I also checked whether it can actually run on local daemon, and it does. If you have a local daemon running, Bytecoin Wallet consumes only 180 MB, while without the daemon it consumes about 1 GB. So there's a lot of things that you've considered.

There are also certain drawbacks that are visible on the second glance. E.g., the addressbook doesn't seem to be sorted at all. However, these minor things only mean that other main issues have been really polished. I hope you're going to further improve Bytecoin Wallet to eliminate those minor ones.

What does "Locked amount" mean in the wallet? And why do strange amounts like this one pop up?

That's the funds that are not available for spending. It's either unconfirmed transactions, mined coins, or time-locked transfers. It may also contain the change: when you send money to a recipient, Bytecoin actually takes more than it requires for the transfer, makes the transaction, and returns spare coins back to you. So locked amount may temporarily increase after you've sent the money.

The funds are getting unlocked fast. Ordinary transactions require 2-5 minutes, while newly mined coins take about 20 minutes to get unlocked.

Wallet skins are going to be available in the next release. The 8bit addition might be fun, we'll give it a try.

It's resizable and should fit within even on the smallest screens. What's your screen resolution?

The wallet is nice, the interface is intuitive. But for a user new to Bitcoin and CryptoNote coins it may be difficult to figure out what's going on.

A video may be even a better idea.

I also send a giveaway and I've just tried to send 5000 Bytecoin to 10 people. I thought I have to enter the amount once and than add the addresses but it turned out that I need to enter the amount for each address separately which is not really convenient. Will this feature added in future releases? ???

Could un-encrypted wallet generated with new Bytecoin wallet be opened with simplewallet? Would simplewallet ask to enter password in this case?

As I understand, new wallet files can't be opened with simplewallet at all.

What's the "label" in SEND BYTECOINS? Some kind of a payment ID?. But there's already PAYMENT ID at the bottom.

Label here means the name for this address that should be saved in contacts. It is just a good feature to save a new address directly after sending the money to it.

what does "address" in the wallet mean? does the wallet generate new addresses??? Is it my new bytecoin address?? Is it the one i should use????

Yes, when the first opening the wallet generates a new address for the user

Quote
Once you open Bytecoin Wallet, it will automatically create your first Bytecoin address and start synchronizing with the network.

If you don't need that, just open the wallet that you used before. You've gotta go File - Open wallet, then find it and hit the button and you're done.

Btw if you're gonna come around and and use the automatically generated address, then you better encrypt it: go Settings - Encrypt wallet and create a password (complex one!).

I think that guides are required in any case. Will it be available on bytecoiner.org?
The wallet is nice, the interface is intuitive. But for a user new to Bitcoin and CryptoNote coins it may be difficult to figure out what's going on.

A video may be even a better idea.

That's a good idea, thank you! The problem is that among those who support Bytecoin community site there is no one who could make such guides.

If you have any ideas or a vision on how this should look like then feel free to help. I would be glad if you PM me (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=200355) or send email (info@bytecoiner.org).

Very nice work and I like the first BCN wallet.

Maybe there is space for some improvements:
To the current one: window Transaction details - in the right corner is Question mark, I would expect it will be like a help with explanation of different boxes in the window but you will see only icon of prohibition sign

Will be there possibility to add more own address and manage them from one wallet?

Is this new wallet open source because I never download crypto-related binaries, and most serious crypto investors are the same. It's much too dangerous.

Bytecoin Wallet is currently in open beta. We're still cleaning up the code and basically await your feedback to finalize the Wallet, before we release the sources.
In case you are concerned with this issue, you may continue to use Bytecoin with simplewallet. In any case I would appreciate if you gave Bytecoin Wallet a test drive.

I will stick with simplewallet for now.

I noticed that some of the issues (improper display of spends) with simplewallet were recently cleaned up. FYI, there is still a crash if simplewallet is used on a old wallet without deleting the .dat file.

Get more RAM, and more diskspace. CN isn't as lean as Bitcoin (if BTC blockchain still gets called like that)

I encountered such an effect.
As a matter of fact GUI doens't consume too much. But during full synchronization it can.

Just close it (normally, don't kill) and restart. You can do this even in the middle of synch - it will significantly reduce memory requirements.

I think you need 850-1200MB of RAM for the wallet. First run or wallet takes the highest number 1200MB.

hey, is there any possibility to mine just right from the bytecoin wallet?
i don't see this function in the wallet, but i want it to be there. bytecoin gui miner would be so damn cool  8)
if there is no mining feature in the bytecoin wallet now, bcn devs, do you plan to add it in the future? i think it is very very good to have "start mining now!" button in the wallet near the balance dashboard.

well yeah, GUI miner sounds great, but I'm against shoving it inside the wallet, that would be too much. The wallet looks elegant and easy now, but throwing the miner inside of it.. erm, that'd be overkill IMHO.

This is great!

Downloaded wallet, ran once.
Downloaded blockchain files and shoved in my appdata>roaming>bytecoin folder.

Ran again - took a couple of minutes to sync.

Got my free Bytecoin from the bytecoin site. It appeared in locked instantly and then unlocked in a couple of minutes!

Well done! Great work!

btw - what files exactly do I need to backup on the new wallet?

Edit: Silly Jimbo - just noticed the 'backup' option under file - so it just backs up the .wallet file.

Next silly question! Does this file store the address book as well?

Hi Jimbo, the address book is stored separately. In the next releases we're going to significantly improve its security.

LOL, on the main Bytecoin thread all you scream is this coin is a  scam, and in here you sound like an interested supporter ...... its obvious that your only interested if the wallet is open source... aren't you one of the XMR dev ?

I am part of the Monero Core team. I also have mined BCN on various occasions and I still have some. I won't use anything for any crypto that is not open source though and that has nothing to do with BCN or XMR.

Hey Bytecoin People!  Quick question: I've searched around quite a bit already on this but have not found a solution.

I just want to very SIMPLY and QUICKLY generate a bytecoin address AND PRIVATE KEY to stash away a small BCN stake, long-term in COLD paper wallet.

Haven't you guys set up something to JUST do that, yet?  Very simple and quick?  Something like MyEtherWallet for ETH or BitAddress for BTC?

I mean, srsly even the gawd-awful Cloak coin has ported-over a quick simple paperwallet generator page (from BitAddress source --
 https://paperwallet.cloakcoin.com/ -- apparently)

And you guys are srsly expecting new/casual users to download your entire blockchain and use the command-line wallet ONLY to do this simple thing???

C'mon... LOL

A simple clean paper wallet generator ought to have been the FIRST THING to do on your list!!!

So IS there one SOMEWHERE, I have missed????

Hey guys im having a problem and I am hopeful someone here has an easy fix.

I had an amount of Bytecoin sent to my wallet last week. It didnt show up even though it was confirmed and I have checked the address about 10 times with different people checking it again even though I copied and pasted it to begin with.

I have tried resyncing the wallet as I think it might have been out of date. It showed that it had resynced however nothing showed up and it was showing the wrong date.
I then closed the wallet and reset my computer to attemped the 3 day long sync again. When I try to open it now I just get an error message "Blockchain load error".

I have moved to a different computer and tried the same process and it was stuck on 11 Aug 2014 19:57 for more then a day. So I reset the computer and when I open it back up it is saying that it is synced which it definitly hasnt as there is no Bytecoin in there. I am now attempting this on another computer in the hopes that a faster internet connection can assist in this matter.

Has anyone else had a problem like this?
Is there a way I can force the wallet to resync?
Is there somewhere that I can download the blockchain directly?

Hi what version do you have, 1.1.5 ?
A friend a I had the same, we send some coins but they never showed in our wallet.
So I googled it, and someone on Reddit said, if you run 1.1.5 version you have to download the 1.1.4 version (fully synced)
After this, our coins showed up.... give it a try... and let us know if this worked for you ok.

good luck!

Hey everyone,

I have a quick question about the wallet.
This may be a super noob question, I have recently installed the Bytecoin wallet.
But, I don't seem to be able to get it to download the blockchain to completion. Am I just being basic?

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers
