Title: Mycelium Fee Calculation - Anything wrong?
Post by: Muhammed Zakir on April 10, 2015, 04:39:33 PM
Hello,

I used Mycelium iOS to send Bitcoins from a private key. I am getting a high fee than it should be, 0.0004BTC or so. Isn't Mycelium's default fee 0.0001BTC/1000 bytes? I don't think the size of the transaction I was going to send is 4000+ bytes. Is there any problem in fee calculation? I am only seing this problem in Mycelium. Thank you!

there are 3 fee in mycelium, 0.2 mBTC ; 0.1 mBTC ; 0.01 mBTC
you probably got a high fee because you tried to spend a low input or one from a sendmany(exchanges and the sort)

I haven't checked made any tests. I only use Mycelium for sending BTC from a private key.

Do you mean we can choose any of these amounts as fee per 1000 bytes?

Nope.

or one from a sendmany(exchanges and the sort)

Nope.

Mycelium gave me fees higher than it should be. Size were low, so the fee should be too. Also I am spending from a private key not from address in wallet.

I haven't used Mycelium on iOS before but I have it for Android. Are you able to change the fee amount, like on the Android version? On my phone I'm able to click the box underneath the "Miner Fee" text to switch it between Economic, Normal, or Priority fees. I suspect you should be able to do the same.

Edit: Here's an image of the page I'm talking about: https://i.imgur.com/EhcWJdi.png - the blue boxes are all clickable and changeable.

I tried to spend from a private key and there isn't any options related to fees. Changeable things are Bitcoins(in both USD and BTC) and recipient address.

iOS version doesn't support different fees yet. As for the high fee, it would be high if you have a lot of inputs, or if you are spending a really tiny amount.

ETA? Can we add custom fee or we can only select from a list(i.e. high, normal & low)?

I didn't have many inputs. I was trying to spend 0.5+BTC. The size wasn't high enough for the fees to become high.

If you want us to further investigate, the easiest would be to post the transaction hash or send it to info@mycelium.com - if you don't want to, can you tell us the number and approx amounts of inputs and outputs and the total size of the transaction in kilobytes?

I am afraid I can't replicate the issue. However, if it happen again, I will email. Could you please tell ETA of supporting custom fees? Thank you!

We currently have no plans to change the options of standard, priority and economical fees.
Being able to freely set the fees makes it very easy for users to accidentally burn their money, send transactions which take ages to confirm or never do, and the use cases are very rare. If someone has one of those rare advanced use cases, he usually has the tools at hand (desktop wallet) anyway and does not need a mobile wallet for that. We'd rather not allow our users to easily shoot themselves in the foot.

Ok. It will be good if there is two user mods(basic+advanced or similar), so users can choose according to their likes.

Thank you for your time.
