Title: What to do with Raspberry Pi 2?
Post by: Hamuki on April 12, 2015, 06:56:05 PM
Hey everyone.

I have a Raspberry Pi 2 and I dont really know what to do with it.
The plan was to make it a node for the network.. But I kinda wanna do something else too.

Something where it just sits and calculates data or something :P

Got any ideas then please post below :P

Build cgminer onto it and connect some USB miners?

Small webserver and/or mumble server, VPN or ssh tunnel, owncloud, etherpad are always good ideas.

You can also look into BOINC projects and Gridcoin or other POS coins where running a wallet 24/7 can get you some small interest.

It's not really powerful enough to be efficient for crunching data. I wanna get one as well at some point and I'm thinking of using it as a dedicated media center with one of my TVs. It's small and quiet and can easily be concealed. There's really a lot of stuff you can do with it if you think about it.

you can use this to mine coins by attaching some miners to this
its good for low cost startup mining

You could use it to crunch old games data in a mini MAME cabinet. :)
Something like this:

Actually it doesn't use a Raspberry Pi, but you get the idea. Awesome!

Could use it as a clam staking machine or use it as media box as others mentioned.

Keep it as a secure computer to keep your coins on. They'll likely be much safer on a pi than a windows computer.

i was considering using my to built a CI (continuous integration, run tests on every code change) visual interface...

But nah, I stopped with CI and now i have no use for it.

Anyone have ideas that worth anything?
I was even considering building a daft punk helmet with controllable display, but who knows, maybe someone has a better idea

I would stick with your plan and run a Bitcoin node on it just to strenthen the Bitcoin protocol even further

Create a fallout pipboy..I remember reading this somewhere and it looked awesome it had all the stats like limbs damaged and everything. Raspberry pi are pretty powerful for such a little thing so I think it would be a good idea for a media center too because of the little power is uses

Abacus, have you built something like that before? I am trying to find a good source for a cabinet so I can build one for myself.

Nope, but I hope I will a day. It is on my TODO list from long time ago, just not much prioritary.

About the cabinet, I think that a DIY approach could worth a try.
The picture I posted shows a very nice finish of the wood and details like the plexiglass with backlight (the Mame logo), but I think that using some MDF, glue and black paint for the entire cabinet the work will be much easier and faster, even if not as pretty.

I am having my Pi 2 stream live video from my bee hive. I'd take pictures of it, but you know.. the Pi 2 is camera shy (https://nakedsecurity.sophos.com/2015/02/11/most-adorable-bug-raspberry-pi-2-crashes-when-you-take-a-photo-of-it/).

Cool, I just ordered the stuff to make a retropie.   It's very cool because the pi 2 is capable of playstation games without any issues.   I just haven't decided how to mount it.   I just found this thing called the iCade and it seems like that might make a good cabinet candidate instead of doing the DIY thing.   I don't know if it will be enough buttons for most psx games though.
