Title: Antminer S5 getting low hash rates
Post by: ultramaman on April 13, 2015, 01:03:45 AM
Hi,
need some advice here.

I've recently, over the weekend , got hold of an antminer s5. I'm using a thermaltake 730W psu with 2 separate railings for the 6 pin connectors. and i've made sure i connect a single blade to one  railing.

the issue is, i cant seem to get a decent hash rate. im averaging something below 50ghash . which doesnt make sense.  my other miners are on slush pools and im aware that i need to set the worker diff level in order for the pool to assign the work correctly , right ? so that works well for my s4 . but when i set the worker to 1024 , i cant a very low hash rate. i tried leaving it blank as well so that the pool can identify and assign work accordingly. that doesnt seem to help. i've also tried btcguild . that still gives the same results. i tried searching the forum for anyone with similar issues, but so far, cant find any.

any ideas, or advice ?

Do you have some xxxxxx on miner status screen?

My bet is on the PSU. I had similar situation with 700W PSU. try another one, or try powering S5 with 2 PSUs at the same time. Just makensure that each psu is connected to only one hashing board.

Try antpool and see what it does.  If it does not pick up to a faster rate.  I suggest uploading picture of configuration, and status.  That will help us know more.

Without pics, its harder to communicate what it looks like.

figured out that my psu is somehow not powerful enough for the miner. after adjusting the frequency to around 300 , im getting a decent hashrate of 850 to 900 Ghash .

thank you all for the advice .

im guessing, i just need to pick up a corsair. would a 750W corsair be enough ?

Yes 590 watts is the default on watt's needed.  - https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=902305.0

750 gives it enough headroom it should have no issues.

Solution is simple, reflash firmware, untick   "save settings", should be fine with any firmware.

How can it help in case of weak PSU?..  ;)

There is one Russian IT rule: "seven problems - one reset". May be it's about that...  :D

p.s. but smit1237 appearantly offers an advanced version of that rule, where the reflashing is required.

i actually tried to reflash, first thing i did , i downloaded the firmware from the website and tried to reflash it, it came back with an error . short read.

but im curious why the psu that im using is not enough for the s5 . im using a thermaltake 730W with 87% efficiency . http://www.thermaltake.com/products-model.aspx?id=C_00001966 (http://www.thermaltake.com/products-model.aspx?id=C_00001966)

the s5 that im using was shipped to me on early april 2015. so im guessing it should have the latest firmware , right ?

if the psu is a low quality one it could be that, because the s5(it is overclocked?) run at 590 at default, no so far from 730(with bad efficiency 87), if it were a good psu with a better efficiency, like corsair or seasonic it would have been enough

otherwise i can only think of a defective device...

Your psu is single rail psu, so it's should be enough to powered 1 unit S5.
Try to check if there is any loose connector especially the ribbon cable.

Go single rail... t'was the first thing I was told when I started mining...
ALWAYS go single rail.
You could power that miner with a 650w single rail PSU. (no O/C)
There is no way you should have problems with a 750w PSU but yeah...
You only 1 rail, you're a miner, not a train  ;D

Hope you get it figured out.

during the firmware reinstall, please select this option!
