Title: what happened to bitcoin-24.com?
Post by: Petopas on August 23, 2012, 12:50:41 AM
bitcoin-24.com is offline for >4h.
the trade history at bitcoincharts.com looks unusual: http://bitcoincharts.com/markets/btc24EUR_trades.html
there was a turnover of 5k+ bitcoins within seconds before the site closed down.
couldn't get any further information so far.

Doh!  Not a good sign, for sure.

I asked on their main thread (German), no response yet:

thanks for asking at their main thread. let's wait for the admins' response...

somebody flooded the market with under-priced bitcoins at around 6€/us$7.5 till the site was taken offline.

actually not just selling under-priced bitcoins but buying over-priced bitcoins as well, i.e. trying to empty the market. pretty expensive. doesn't make to much sense to me. any ideas?

they just uploaded a temporary replacement:

"Will be back on Thursday - about 10:00
There are some problems with bid and ask offers.
No EUR / BTC are lost!"

...and I already thought there are pirates all over the place...

It's simple Market manipulation, as to why...

Options:
#1 Crash price to buy back a significant larger amount at a far lower price.
#2 Crash price to devalue BTC of competition. Companies like BFL probably have a large amount of BTC in their wallets, personnel, bills, and raw materials are purchased in $ and not BTC. So if this is done long/often enough it might 'kill' such a company. The same goes for the bigger miners, they need to keep paying their rack hosting costs, power usage, their own bills, etc.
#3 Someone with to much money on hand might be bored and thinks that manipulating the BTC value is fun. If you think that is nuts, realize this. time = money, thus money = time, there are legions of folks that 'waste' their time trolling webforums... ;-)

ok, b24 is up again. The admin has already been able to reverse most of the unsolicited transactions (except btc out-transfers of course, but according to his helpdesk announcement this afternoon this wasn't the main problem). Quick admin response, I'd say.
