Title: Spams are high in "Beginners & Help" sub-board! Please resolve.
Post by: Muhammed Zakir on April 19, 2015, 10:01:38 AM
Hello,

Spams are increasing in "Beginners & Help" sub-board. Most posts aren't really a beginner question, rather, an off-topic question.

Examples:

Did you earn some bitcoin today? If so, how did you do it? BTC

Its interesting please post here  ;) ;)

How much BTC do you have now ?  ???
How much did you spent?  ::)
How much did you lost or scammed by someone?  :'(

Thanks

Just a question  ;)

Which BTC wallet  you are using?
coinbase , blockchain, btc-e, bittrex or any one else?

There are many rephrased posts too. The board is becoming a "speculation" board and/or an "off-topic" board.

An action should be taken ASAP IMHO or correct me if I am wrong.

Im somewhat torn here. Survey posts are fine in a discussion board IMHO. It would be the next thing that is taken down due to sig spammers.

+1 posts would have been fine in my opinion if it weren't for sig campaigns. Getting paid for posting meaningless posts is the problem, so once you disallow them for people with sig campaigns you have to disallow them for everyone else.

For upcoming signature campaign, I think will be :

Qualifying Posts:
Must be made with the appropriate signature.
Must be constructive to the topic.
Investor-based games sub-board does not count.
Non-English posts will not count.
Posts in this thread does not count.
Posts in the off-topic board do not count.
Posts in Beginners & Help do not count.  :-\
Posts in other signature campaigns do not count.

That's not a bad idea actually, I think a few more should be added to that list.

Posts in the 'Meta' board do not count. (Seriously, no company would prefer to advertise in Meta Board)

Posts in the 'Politics & Society' board do not count. (This has turned into another off-topic board, a news on any topic is posted which is not related to Bitcoin at all and people just keep arguing trying to prove their views)

I think these 'rules' may be implemented now, why should we wait for the upcoming signature campaigns?

I think one day (maybe also in this year) all the signature campaign will be banned, I think this is the unique way to stop those users (because if they are not paid for do that , then I am sure they will stop to open those useless thread).

Actually you're right, these should be implemented immediately, let's see then how many people really wanna discuss the world affairs or forum when they're not getting paid for it.

We should ban also giveaways altogether since...people spam pointless posts into them, even if they miss the requirements set by OPs.
E.g. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1023176.180 (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1023176.180)

Yes but we should remember that those rules should only be 'forced' by the various signature campaign maintainers and not by the staff. However I am still thinking that the two parts should cooperate to reduce the quantity of insubstantial posts.

If the posts are not paid that I do not think it should be banned 'that section'. A lot of censorship will cause a lot of migration.

However in some case the problem is the signature ad, in other case the problem is the post; but if the post 'is ok' then in that case if someone don't want to see the sig. ad he can disable the view through the grue's script (with the use of a browser extension).

If survey posts are okay, then that threads are okay. But these survey posts are increasing in that board. It not only survey posts, many of the threads are already answered but many rephrased and double posts are being made and some threads have many pages. For example, if you check this thread (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1029012.0;all), "paper wallet" is suggested a few times. There are also other threads like these there. I think, we will have to see such posts and no action will be taken.

Rules look good.

Meta board is fine IMHO.

I think this is the wrong approach. If you are simply finding sections where a lot of people make a lot of useless posts and then exclude payment for those sections then the spammers will simply find other sections to spam in.

A better solution would be to simply do a better job of screening potential participants and to do a better job of managing participants professionally by warning and/or removing participants when they start to make a large number of insubstantial posts.

I am not sure how active MiningBuddy and tysat are at moderating however I don't think I see them posting very often. Maybe the newbie section needs another moderator?

Other sections with a lot of problems regarding insubstantial posts (the politics and the off topic sections) do not have any moderators at all, so maybe it is a lack of moderator problem.

Exactly, it should be applied by campaign managers but I really think that it would cut down on a lot of insubstantial posts.

Rules look good.

Meta board is fine IMHO.

All boards are fine, I am not saying block people from posting in those boards, I am just saying that posts made in these boards shouldn't be paid.

I do my best to report SPAM in the Beginner section.  More people need to use that link.

This is exactly what I've been saying. Soon half the forum will be 'banned' and that will just make people spam in the sections that aren't so it's counter-productive. It seems like campaign managers are just being lazy and hoping a bot can do all their work for them but yet still get free advertising when they do post in there. Rather than dissalow places where people 'spam' you just shouldn't have those spammers in your campaign in the first place.

Other sections with a lot of probles regarding insubstantial posts (the politics and the off topic sections) do not have any moderators at all, so maybe it is a lack of moderator problem.

Tysat is barely active here and MiningBuddy is one of the least active mods but does handle some reports. These subs do need some dedicated mods or better yet some new Global mods. Beginners section was previously ok because patrollers could just handle the newb posts in there but it's becoming more active by older members now posting in the newbish threads so it does need some more mods (or more Globals to cover everything).

More then half the board is already banned for signature campaign purposes, including many places that companies likely would benefit from receiving advertisements on (e.g. local sections for an international company ::) ). I understand not wanting to pay people to post in signature campaign threads because of the fact that anyone viewing a signature campaign thread would likely already know about the company in question, however sections like the local boards and the altcoin sections are just dumb, especially when a company that trades, among other things alt coins is being advertised.

I had mentioned the suggestion that campaign managers should publish a list of people who are due for payment and various participants could review their post quality and publish their results/findings. This is something that stunna did not long before he closed down the PD campaign and I think it worked pretty well. here (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=699744.0) is the thread discussing post quality of participants. It resulted in having the manager going from having to check the post quality of probably over 200 participants to having to check the quality of ~35 participants, most of which needed to be checked because a link to their profile was not included.

I think companies should hire more experienced managers to run their signature campaigns and potentially allow people will less experience to run smaller deals. If you let people with only a few days experience running a campaign run one with a huge budget then you are just asking for problems.

Well the newbie section is going to have a lot of spam like posts by default because people are going to be asking a lot of stupid questions. You really need a moderator there to find threads whose questions have been sufficiently answered and lock the threads - this would probably reduce a large amount of the spam.

The politics section has been both filled with shit posts and been really clean with great conversation. I think how clean the politics section is has to do with how much the globals decide they want to moderate it. I remember at one point zolace (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=802114.0;all) was just chatting with one of his alts in the Politics section, and this probably lasted for months - as a resulted I was unable to participate in any conversations in that section and just avoided it. It defiantly needs a moderator.

This is an overkill. If this continues desperate campaigners will be posting more in the Discussion and Economics sections and make it even worse. There is only so much moderation can do.

The Beginner thread should be left alone. There will be a lot of Newbies with questions. Its better to let it how it is with the chance that a few useless posts are being made. They are not hurting anyone after all.

The anger at the spam is surprising. It was a huge problem earlier but with all the bans its much better now, no need to overdo it.

I'm guessing the Technical Support board will be hard for spamming ;D
