Title: Burning the Patriot Act.
Post by: DarkLinkXXXX on May 28, 2011, 08:07:08 AM
I strongly disapprove of the Patriot Act 'cause it violates many rights given to us by the U.S. constitution and the Universal Declaration of Human rights.

So I am just gonna print out multiple copies of it, wear my black hoodie and US bandana, and burn it right in front of an army recruitment center. Any words of advice would be great. ;)

Show some support and I'll be sure to get the whole thing on video.

Criticism of your gov: it does the mind and body good. :)

Undying love for your government is not patriotic. Restless criticism is patriotic.

"Patriotism is always supporting your country, and supporting your government when it deserves it." -Mark Twain

A nice overview from the kink non-terrorist Americans of the Concerned Citizens Against the patriot act

EDIT: I see a lot of cool people with cool ideas on this thread.

Unfortunately, I am a poor man. I have -$5, so rly all I can afford to do right now is print out the patriot act at a libary (I'm sure there completely welcome to people with a hoodie and a bandana over their face :), which should be free as long as it's < 70 pages. Unless donations go through the roof, which is unlikely, and probably not beneficial since so many things are more important, I won't be able to print it on toilet paper, or shred it threw fifty paper shreders.

P.S. Please note that the best donation you could possibly give is taking a stand of your own.  :-X

IMO, a courthouse or legislature building would be a more fitting place to burn the Patriot Act.

Thx for the tip. Unfortunately, there aren't many places that a 15 yr old can go. :)

I'm sure you can find a federal building if you try.

Remember to bring critically important activist safety equipment: a bunch of friends with video cameras.

I am absolutely going to have planned witnesses.

True...

Instead of the black hoodie, you should dress up as Uncle Sam. As you're burning it, you can yell "This is a patriot's act!" or similar.

I'd still not recommend burning things anywhere near a military recruiting center, you're liable to be labeled a terrorist and have warrantless (illegal) wiretaps placed upon your phones. :)

A protest I'd like to see video of: Burning W-2 forms in front of an IRS office.

What do you suggest? A paper shredder?

Actually, that would be quite funny.

You'd have to razamataz it up a bit though - have like 50 of them or something... one for each state.

Don't worry, it's only needed for the war on terror.  Once that's over, it will be allowed to expire.

O Rly?

[paraphrase source="US Patriot Act" cite="http://www.scn.org/ccapa/pa-vs-const.html"]

The government may search and seize Americans' papers and effects without probable cause to assist terror investigation.

The government may jail Americans indefinitely without a trial.

To assist terror investigation, the government may monitor religious and political institutions without suspecting criminal activity.

The government may monitor conversations between attorneys and clients in federal prisons and deny lawyers to Americans accused of crimes.

The government may prosecute librarians or keepers of any other records if they tell anyone the government subpoenaed information related to a terror investigation.

Americans may be jailed without being charged or being able to confront witnesses against them.

[paraphrase]

I rest my case.

Ironic how Obama is in the picture when Bush did more to kill the constitution in his term.

It's not ironic. Bush isn't president anymore so he's no longer relevant. Would you like one with Hamilton on there too?

Some guy actually tried that. I think he burned his house and then crashed a plane on the IRS...

Oh, and the Oklahoma guy too, seemly he also exploded a federal building.

I like the paper shredder idea, if only for your safety.

Leaving something on fire in a public place will almost certainly get you arrested.

I like the idea of people accepting donations to take on acts of civil disobedience.  As an adult, I can't, publically at least ;-), support a kid doing illegal things.

I do support you or anyone though, taking bounties to raise awareness on issues in exchange for the risk of you doing so.

BTW, I thought there was an army recruitment center, but I was mistaken.

Can anyone recommend a place around 98292 where someone with a learners perm. can easily drive?

Thanks in advance.
