Title: The beginning of the killer app era for bitcoin
Post by: lebing on April 20, 2015, 07:57:42 AM
One company already has a working prototype of a permission less dumbphone bitcoin app. It is now rumored that 21 is also working on a project with Qualcomm to install a bitcoin wallet into every phone on the planet through 21. When these hit market, the world will never be the same.

if true that would be massive for sure. that will make bitcoin adoption easier for the average joe. but i only believe it once it actually happens. action speaks louder than words.

Wouldn't be surprised if 21 turned out to be the crazy honey badger paving the way for Bitcoin's really big time success! They wouldn't have raised that much without an actual plan in place.

Why would they do that. An increase in usage and utility also means an increase in demand for the tokens used (Bitcoins). I don't really see a scenario in which this is bad news for Bitcoin's price...

There's a huge difference between VC capitalists from Wall Street, Silicon Valley (or wherever) investing huge FIAT sums into companies involved in the Bitcoin technology and companies who are being crowdfunded by BTC (Ethereum comes to mind). The companies in Silicon Valley don't need to dump BTC, they're funded using USD!

I would not bet on that.

Well sure, nothing is certain - this is the speculation forum, but could you maybe at least elaborate why you consider these predictions and ideas to be improbable?

Technically it looks very complicated because SIMs are not directly connected to the Internet and also they don't have storage capacities to store the whole blockchain. Also it does not look likely that a big company would bet its reputation on bitcoin at this stage.

All in all looks like some news made just to make the bitcoin enthusiasts salivate - crazy big numbers, mobile, etc. - something to ignite the imagination of the traders, just like those notorious 'if only Amazon started accepting bitcoin/if only a billionaire invested his pocket money into bitcoin' threads.

Just a speculation :)

You don't need to store the whole blockchain on a mobile device. You just need a lightweight client and some sort of storing private keys securely. A hardware wallet or secure hardware element in a mobile phone (SIM) seems like the perfect way of doing this.

I agree, BitSim could be a real killer app. I've not been this excited about anything Bitcoin-related since months.

I'm also looking forward to the Bitcoincard.

There are a lot of positive developments going on below the radar. In my opinion, very simple hardware solutions have the greatest potential, because people don't have to learn about technology to use them.

The thing that most people on this forum are not getting, is that just because something is on their phone, doesn't mean people will use it. Especially if it's money that they don't understand. And it's not like it's difficult to create a wallet now; the hard/annoying part is obtaining the bitcoin itself. Having wallets on phones won't change that.

I think people will be very disappointed with the results of putting wallets on every phone, unless there are many other steps taken to ensure that people know and trust bitcoin, and it is easier to obtain.

No effin' way in hell I'm trusting my btc to a proprietary hardware phone wallet that'll be backdoored by the NSA/gov't, and can track every single transaction made.

Let's all hope they wouldn't be dumping BTC in the market.

Once BTC reaches its unavoidable fate (worldwide adoption) the dumping of BTC will have an irrelevant impact on the price, literally like a drop on the ocean.
Once you send BTC to your friends and they pay with it using a smartphone, they are hooked, i've seen it happen every time, even their non-tech simple minds can understand the potential.

No worse than trusting your coins to an Android or iOS wallet (or any wallet connected to the internet).

This is why the good lord invented paper wallets. Only a fool keeps more than a coin or two in a live wallet.

Anything that doesn't inspire cashing out to USD is a killer app. Otherwise, spending BTC is as good as selling BTC.

Nice find OP. I believe you are correct. This is definitely one of the ways for bitcoin mass adoption and I believe it will work.

If qualcomm is involved in something, it means you need to sit down and listen. If 21inc is working with qualcomm, it means you need to sit down, listen, and believe what you're being told. It's as simple as that.

I find it rather hilarious how many people posted in this thread that don't understand much of anything at all. ROFL

No, not those cards. The bitsim card redirects encrypted transactions through the sim cards. Unless the NSA can crack SHA 256, then no they cannot crack those transactions.

The hype around 21 has already been priced in quite some time ago. News don't do the trick anymore. Bitcoin's price is currently mainly (only!?) driven by plain old speculation. This may become important in the longterm, though!

Once Maidsafe is operative and decentralized apps are a reality, so many existing programs are going to be effectively deprecated. Who the hell is going to use Bitorrent when you can download anonymously on Maidsafe? the same goes for any single thing you can think off.

Why the hell should I use Maidsafe, if I can use bittorrent easily, knowing how it works, and that it actually works?

I don't know why so many here are so delusional. Even if YOU think that decentralization/anonymity is more important than your life, it's obvious that 99.99999% of the world doesn't feel that way.

I'm not sure, but I have a feeling that when "the peoples money" is waiting for Wall Street to bring high valuation or a killer app from VC-funded startups enabled by government regulation to bring mass adoption then something's not quite right.

I think the killer app is already there. It's called "censorship resistant teleportable sound money".

If people don't use it, then either the people have no need or they don't know they have a need for it.

I think it's the latter. So we might need more education... but when talking to people about money we often hit psychological barriers.

It is not certain. We thought that after 2013 bitcoin price spike it will be only better in 2014 and see what we achieved in 2015, bitcoin is closer to $200 that to $1000. Killer app can't help this situation.
As there is little that can be changed just by adding new software when core elements of bitcoin might be faulty.

Surveliance is going increasingly NUTS... in germany people is getting randomly put to jail because they downloaded some TV series or whatever.

Once people realize there is an alternative like Maidsafe to remain anonymous it will be huge. This is pretty obvious.

This is exactly what I mean by delusional. It doesn't matter whether maidsafe or whatever else is better than bittorrent or not. It doesn't matter whether anonymity is important or not.

What matters is whether people are aware of problems (whether they exist or not) with the current way things work. Clearly, the majority of the world are not overly paranoid nor try as hard as possible to hide their illegal activities, thinking it's completely justified.

Well it boils down to what want to do with the coins. Some people like to store their wealth in a way that it is safe from political or economical shifts. And some people just like being able to buy something online without revealing their identity, BTC has many applications and it is up to you to decide which one you'd like to use.

Well a killer app would definitely change the way things are going - that is actually the definition of a killer app. A rising price would "only" be the effect of such a technology, which is good since it wouldn't only rely on speculation.
