Title: How did Satoshi register bitcoin.org?
Post by: softwareseller on August 26, 2012, 12:06:08 PM
He could use tor and fill fake info on whois. But how could you pay for the domain without leaving trace to registrar?
Of course we could pay for domain with BTC now. But back then?

PS:I'm sure Satoshi is still browsing this forum anonymous even now. If you read this, just know your work is appreciated.

Well no it is registered before the paper was published.  Have you read the paper?  It is obvious Satoshi didn't write it in a couple hours.  The idea of Bitcoin preexisted the paper which preexisted the first version of the client and the genesis block.

Who is sirius? I mean, is his real identity known? Did anyone ever meet him?

There is a theory that bitcoin was designed by a team of people and satoshi was a pseudonym  :)

Perhaps sirius was part of that team if he knew about it back then, or sirius = Satoshi?

The ever growing mythology around what is, at least now, a fictional persona, is mind blowing to see develop. Today’s Satoshi is probably so far removed from the original that if he really were an individual actually called Satoshi, he’d likely be just as much in awe of this character as everyone else seems to be.

This is the making of genuine mythology, the first, or at least the most obvious, I’ve ever seen. I imagine many of the classic myths were created in a similar manner, albeit a lot slower without the internet. If Bitcoin stays around and goes mainstream, in a couple millennia there may be stories about Hercules and Satoshi killing hobbits in Narnia.

Same.

Makes me think a Satoshi inspired fiction anthology might be in order.

Yeah, I'm big fan of Stephenson, one of the only writers who gets away with massive info dumps. "Gets away with" doesn't quite give credit to what he actually does...

updated the history (https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/History). Theymos maybe you want to post a more appropriate source.

Satoshi owns the domain so this is up to him.

I remember that bitcoin.org was registered with Anonymous Speech when Satoshi owned it. You can probably confirm this with one of the services that provide historical whois data.

bitcoin.org was never owned by Satoshi, IIRC.

it actually was.
Martti Malmi says that Bitcoin.org was "originally created by Satoshi." in this 2014 article:

bitcoin.org was originally registered and owned by Satoshi, I recall 100% correctly ...

Satoshi registered the domain bitcoin.org on 18-Aug-2008 here;

The most likely method of payment being cash-in-the-mail or e-gold.

This blog post is also highly factual regarding the subject ...

Maybe he owns a "WhoIs" company, and his staff registered it for him.
