Title: Mining with a 5970, and crashes...
Post by: Bowcaster on August 28, 2012, 05:47:17 PM
Hello, I recently bought a 5970 so I can do some small scale bitcoin mining and I have run into a few problems. I have noticed that most people recommend underclocking the memory speed to 300 but the lowest I can get it to go in Afterburner is 500. I tried to look up how to fix this, and most people said that if you slide it all the way down to 500, close Afterburner then open it again, it will still be at 500, but now 500 will be in the middle of the slider, allowing you to lower it further. I tried this but it doesn't work for me and when I reopen Afterburner it still shows 500 on the far left of the slider.

More importantly, when I try to overclock my card (the core, not the memory) it inevitably crashes after about 10 minutes or so. This is happening even at a small overclock from 725 only risen to 800. Anyway to help stop these crashes?

What OS/driver/SDK/mining program are you using?

Some of those 5xxx cards didn't like memory speeds in the 400-600 range, so it might not like sitting at 500Mhz. CGMiner can drop the mem straight down to 300 with no issues.

Also, some cards can't OC that much. Does it crash at the stock 725?

Windows 7 and just guiminer for now, cause its real simple. I just got the card yesterday so it hasn't been running long, but so far it doesn't seem to crash at stock speeds. I will get cgminer and see if that helps things.

Just because others can underclock theirs, doesn't necessarily mean you will be able to underclock yours stable as well.

ok, I just installed cgminer, but something is obviously ridiculously wrong, because I am currently getting 100 Kh/s. not Mh/s, Kh/s! Even though Afterburner is showing both cores at 97% usage.

looks like you're cpu mining, not gpu mining. get your drivers and opencl installed correctly. also maybe you're litecoin mining, not bitcoin mining

use phoenix and reinstall drivers/sdk if necessary, jaja
