I made a tread last day because my bitcoin fold was saved in

C:\Users\Thomas\AppData\Roaming\Bitcoin

and i was in need of more space because i only have 125gb on my c drive.
so i changed the targed folder to

D:\stuff\Bitcoin\bitcoin-qt.exe -datadir=d:\BitCoinData


so it would save it on my D drive, then i deleted my old bitcoin folder, and it started to download all the blocks again. but all my transactions is now lost.
I know it is because the wallet is bound to the harddrive. so i Deleted everything, downloaded the new version instaled it in my C drive, and then it asked me to select a folder to save my data, and i said i wanted my D drive being used. after all the blockes was downloaded i still had lost all my coins and transaktions.

so how do i change it all back so i can get all my coins and data back?
it would be super helpfull if you can get a pretty easy step by step guide.

Please tell us you made a copy of your old wallet.  :-X

It is the wallet.dat file that holds the keys you need. without those keys there is no way to recover your coins. I hope this is not your situation.

i guess i have to look through all my usb sticks. i have nothing on my PC :(

If you have a backup of your system (e.g. an automatic backup), recover the wallet.dat file.  Hopefully you have it stored somewhere.

i have no backup keys on any of my USB keys.

and i have no system backup from when i had my old wallet keys.
i think i am screwed here.

Only had around 0.2 on in my wallet MAX. so th eloss is not that big.

With .2 it's not really worth getting data recovery.  If you had a restore point in windows might be worth trying it.  You said no backups, but if you had a restore point it might work.

If you don't any of this best thing would be to cut your loses or .2.   Don't want to spend more to get it back the it's worth.

Ok, well that is a bright spot. If I were you I would make a backup of that wallet.dat file right away.  In fact, I make three copies on different media. One of them goes in the safe deposit box at the bank. A second one is geo-cashed in an impossible to guess place. The third you could mail to a relative in another state.

Now even if an atom bomb takes out most of the city I could still recover my coins. And if you know how to use VERY, VERY, strong encryption you could hide one on the internet that could be accessed from anywhere. This does require some thought and understanding of the risks, but could work, especially when combined with other measures such as steganography.

Did you do a permanent delete? If not, it might be in your Windows "Recycle Bin".

Even if it's not, for 0.2 btc, I'd try a freebie undelete utility like Recuva (https://www.piriform.com/recuva). May as well, it's easy to try, and it can't hurt....


FYI restore points in Windows don't typically cover the %appdata% directory.


Not very convenient with Bitcoin Core, considering you'd need to update all of those backups for every 100 new addresses or outbound transactions you make....

try get a recovery software and search for the deleted file name and the file type. it cant get any worse anyway

What I do is create a storage wallet that only sends to my phone once and a while. Then i spend from my phone. But managing wallets IS a pain in the A$$ sometimes.

I'm happy you did not lose your big wallet.  Hardware or cold storage really is a great idea.  It can save you from terrible results.
