Can you just sign a message from your bitcoin client just to prove the ownership of funds.

PMing someone doesn't allow the community the chance to vet the request and increases the chances of getting scammed.   :-\

All loan requests should be made public, for everyone's safety.

Signature by itself is not verifiable. The address used to sign the message, and the message itself (without any inconsistencies in spacing or linebreaks) are both needed to verify the signature.
