Today's topic is Which city do you think can be the global bitcoin hub in the future? Why? Recently, London staked its claim to be the global bitcoin hub. ( http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/04/15/us-currency-bitcoin-london-insight-idUSKBN0N622320150415) Do you think London will surpass San Francisco with web expertise and New York with financial clout to be the foremost fintech center in the world? Or do you think Amsterdam is more likely because there are so many places you can use bitcoin?

if bitcoin goes mainstream, it'll really just be the global tech-finance hub.

I hope It'll be in Asia, say Shanghai/Singapore/Tokyo/Seoul, or a combination of those.

better to have it accross multiple hubs, or it would be seen as a centralization thing

anyway the usual city are okish, new york london, but i do like japan zone, to bad there is a restriction there or a ban? i don't remember

None of the major nations are going to support the Bitcoin. So I expect the global bitcoin hub to come somewhere in the smaller nations. It can come up in the semi-independent nations such as Jersey or the Cayman Islands, or it can be in the nominally independent nations such as Dominica and Grenada. Singapore is another attractive destination, but to be honest, it is a long shot.

Is it really that important that Bitcoin has a hub, therefor a central location?

It is important for bitcoin not to have a central hub actually. It should be as hard as possible and as complicated tas possible to shutdown the network, exchanges and other operations.

First of all I do not agree that Bitcoin should have a hub.
However, if I was to guess where that hub would be, my bet would be in Amsterdam.

Bitcoin it about decentralizing, a central hub is the exact opposite.

Exactly, however, Bitcoin is slowly being led to centralization.
Sooner or later most of the large mining operations will vanish due to the expenses of maintaining the operation.
Only the few that can handle the "heat" will survive, and once everyone else is gone, they will be central authority.

I'm glad you mentioned Shanghai as we based in China. And the receptivity of bitcoin in South Korea and Singapore is quite high.

Why not? London seems to be positive about bitcoin with even some politicians like George Osbourne encouraging it.



Hub is just a silly buzzword journalists like to use. Means nothing really, but its natural that bitcoin adoption will start off in smaller places and businesses grow around it. Hopefully this happens all over the world rapidly not just one or two places.

it looks to me that OP only wanted to do some advertising by using this not very clever article.

The "Hub" here probably refers to a place where people gathered to establish bitcoin business. When bitcoin develops into a new level that don't need them to maintain bitcoin's status, then the "hub" will eventually vanish. As for this phase, I think a hub is good for bitcoin.

Holland doesn't have taxes on BTC (yet). Amsterdam is starting to accept Bitcoin more and more and it attracts a lot of tourists. I smell a business opportunity ;D

I'm not so sure that bitcoin has a future. It seems to me that the real innovation is occurring on alternate blockchains.

In my view, Bitcoin needs Satoshi to return and to continue inventing and innovating. Right now bitcoin development is nil. It's like what if Henry Ford died and they had just kept cranking out Model T's. People like cup holders, rear view mirrors, and power steering.

Not a good example. Money doesn't work that way. People can't just change from one form of money to another like replacing a chair or something.

It's more like using a president for one issue, and then electing a new president for the next issue. It won't work that way.


EDIT: Actually a better way to put it is, even if those little accessories like cup holders are useful, I think most people would prefer a lambourghini without a cup holder to a horse with a cup holder strapped on.

altcoins are missing the biggest thing bitcoin has (more of), which is network effects. Even if it was marginally better, it lags behind so far in the most important criteria that it just won't be used (as much).

My sister did a stint in Altus, man that place sucks balls.

I'll go with the obvious US choice: San Francisco, CA.

Well as things look now... The hub will not be situated within the USA. {Over regulation is definately killing any form of innovation and progress}

I would rather establish a Global Bitcoin hub in a country, where there are no limitations or strict regulations hampering it's progress.

The UK is going in the right direction and they leave room for progress and open development... So my choice would be Londen.

My second choice .. Spain.  ;)

A country should consider one city to be hub.  :)

The Bitcoin Boulevard thing was just another buzzword and only had about ten shops you could spend your coins. I'm surprised coffeshops haven't got involved yet.

Looks like a PR stunt to attract bitcoin fans to visit Amsterdam.

London can definitely a bitcoin hub in the future as the Government of London has shown their willingness to accept & adopt the bitcoin as a currency and london has always welcomed new innovations and technologies so it would be a historical mistake if they don't accept bitcoin as a currency.

In my travels around Europe I always try to find a place that uses Bitcoin when I visit. When I was in Amsterdam in the fall I went to one bar and had a beer because they accepted Bitcoin. When I asked to pay the waitress had to ask the bartender, the bartender pulled out an iPad from under the bar. It was dead so he needed to charge it up to get it going. I don't remember what the final outcome was from the iPad but he couldn't get it to work so I just paid in cash.

I went to London for a Bitcoin conference and there was only one Bitcoin place in the area, a hamburger restaurant. I couldn't really tell if it was at a location or if it was a lunch truck. It was not open on the weekend that I was there.

In Vienna the restaurant near the hotel accepted Bitcoin but it was a very high end restaurant with a long waiting list and the food they served was not all that appealing to me anyway so I did not try it.

I did find a great bar in Budapest ( http://www.ankerklub.hu ) that I was able to pay at the bar in bitcoins and they even gave me 10% off of the bill for doing so.

In Milan I went to a pizza restaurant run by a Chinese family that accepted Bitcoin. I had to help the guy a little bit to show the cashier how to use his BitPay app.

I might go to Belgium this month, I heard something about Bitcoin in one of the towns there. I'll have to check it out.

No definitive hub yet that I have seen.

I would like to be able to go to a tourist town and say I have only bitcoins, give me an itinerary for the weekend where I can eat, sleep, buy a few souvenirs and do a few tours paying for each place with bitcoins.

I guess this is the disappointing thing with bitcoin currently. It's hard to find anywhere that accepts bitcoin and when you do there always seems to be some complication.


Well hopefully that will be possible in the future. I'd really like bitcoin to be a sort of world currency that you can use at many places all around the world. I'm sure these so called hubs will grow both in size and numbers over time but it'll be a slow process I reckon.

Yeah Bitcoin will be the global currency in future and it doesn't need any global hub. Once the mass adoption is started it will be used world wide and talking about the global hub i think Shanghai can be a better option as compared to USA or London.

Most bitcoin users in China are focus on mining and trading rather than paying.
