Title: Newbie accounts used for trolling
Post by: afbitcoins on May 14, 2015, 07:46:56 AM
Did there not used to be a rule that newbies were confined to the Beginners section for a period of time. Has that been abandoned ? The speculation forum is plauged by regular new threads started by brand new 'newbies' accounts. They all appear to obviously be the same person behind these different accounts. Last one was called something like 'noone want this shitcoin anymore'.

Could we see the newbies again confined to beginners for initial period of time ?

Honestly if that happens it would solve a lot of problems, recently here someone posted how to get rid of spam bots and im pretty sure that would help because even if they make tons of accounts they wont still be able to post outside the beginners section.

Don't need a newbie jail again but speculation should be watch-only for newbies IMHO.

I don't think it would. It would just delay them for a short while. Newbie jail has been requested to be brought back numerous times but the negatives of it seem to outweigh the positives and you will never stop determined trolls whilst putting off regular users who just want to contribute.

The best thing to do is report such newbie's and they will be nuked .

By the way , what's a newbie Jail ??? Have heard it many times , i realize it something that stops newbie from posting too much or something like that.
Can i get a clear view on it ?

"Newbie Jail" is a term used to describe a small portion of the forum that newbies were restricted to.  They didn't have access to everything, hence the term "jail".

I remember to have seen or better read that "trolling" is against the forum rules or am I wrong? So it should be necessary only a report to mod and those users should be banned.

Bit if you will see that is not against thee forum rules, than the OP should start to use the ignore function (why not, also now).

You mean they were confined to a certain portion only ? Well that is quite wrong and it'll effect new comers as not all of them are spammers .
It should not return , And yeah Thank you for explaining it to me :)

hahaha you're going too much about the rules man! I hope all's fine.
If it's not given in the rules , doesn't mean it's not wrong , it's better to report newbie trollers because most of the time they are just Farmed accounts.

Yes, that restriction is no longer in force.

There was a thread about bringing back the newbie jail posted a while ago (it's a subject that pops up every now and then):

http://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1006758

The general statement from the staff was that it doesn't actually prevent people from creating sockpuppet accounts and scamming/spamming the board and that the restrictions are only a minor annoyance to them while at the same time, it puts off average users from contributing.

By the way , what's a newbie Jail ??? Have heard it many times , i realize it something that stops newbie from posting too much or something like that.

That was the beginner & help board (and the local boards). The term "newbie jail" probably isn't even completely accurate since the restriction was removed once you made several posts, not when you actually stopped being a newbie.

Also if it is present in the rules it could also not be wrong ;). This is a forum governed by these rules and if it is not against those rules why those users should be stopped?

"Farm" an account is not against the forum rules, the unique big rule is to avoid the spam but also the spam could be a subjective thing.

I have found a post made by BadBear:

Same reason you always get banned, ban evasion and trolling.

So I think "trolling" is against the forum rules, and all the trollers should be banned (newbie and not newbie users) but this is a decision to do case by case basis.

Well known troller clowns are creating accounts to troll with like it's nothing, why can't an admin not simply set a limit of accounts being created per person per timeframe.

For example 1 account per week or so, that would reduce these nonsense threads by a lot.

What 'reference' will you use to create and apply this limit, the trolls can use unlimited IPs (through : vpn, proxy or tor). I think it is not so simple, the unique way is to continue report the posts and the Staff will check those users.

The most effective way I have found so far, reporting posts that is either trolling or just spamming nonsense. After all, it is again the job of the moderators to enforce the rules here in the forum so any restrictions/newbie jails wouldn't be needed IMO.

I know they can use plenty of proxies to create accounts, but at least it shows that the site is doing something to reduce this nonsense.

Most of the ip's that come from various sources are well known and can be blacklisted as far as creating accounts goes on this forum.

1 account per ip, per week, doesn't seem like an unreasonable rule. It won't stop them, but it will reduce crap being posted.

I think posts should be reviewed before it being submitted instantly for noobie accounts. Might create  more work for mods to moderate the posts and approve or not approve each post but would stop a lot of spam and prevent trolling and any misconduct for new accounts being made until account is at least say 1 to 2 weeks old and then has sections reduced and more sections allowed to post in without moderation of post being submitted for review by mod.

I don't remember being restricted at all when I was a newbie 3,4 months ago other than long posting and PM sending times.  ???

I don't support this. This will be a heavy workload for staffs. It is better to deal with spam after it is made because they will get additional help from people who report posts.

Newbie jail was removed long back, way before you and I registered.

It also makes the honest people who want this community to succeed stand out over everyone else.

Personally, I have reported 389 posts with 98% accuracy.

I gave up submitting after 22 posts and had upto 11 at 100% then gone to 55% and then got banned for a stupid reason and since then I have decided not to report any more unless find it abusive or rude but since things happened I don't report much any more use to like to help out on here but ill let others do that now. Accounts for trolling should just be perm banned and suspended and all related accounts to it.

So, there used to be a rules that newbie limited to the Beginners section for a period of time?
I think we need to run that rules again, because it would reducing the amount of spam.

It won't and in fact, it would only increase spam as legitimate users will turn away.

I agree. It brought it to a halt last time. I just ignore all the new accounts. If they are still here when they reach an activity level of 14, then I will read them. Most of the spam accounts never get that far.

I think it is time for the nub jail to return. They can still post in the section for new users, but a new account that starts with a ridiculous FUD post should be banned immediately with no recourse. They are junking up the speculation forum with this stuff. And it is not speculation they are doing.

Or maybe we should consider these kinds of posts to be scamming and give them huge negative trust. You can't trust a person who is full of B.S., right?

Well if the consensus is that we just report these to moderator I will do that but so far when I've treid that I had no success with my report seemingly ignored  ???

Are there guidlines for what should be reported ?

It seems a bit unclear. Trolling isn't strictly punished, nor is abuse as long as they confirm to all other rules. So newbie accounts created solely for attacking people don't automatically 'qualify' for nuking AFAICT.
