Title: Is mining on Linux any faster than on Win7?
Post by: super6 on May 30, 2011, 06:40:10 AM
I'm going to be building a mining rig in a couple weeks (3x6990) and I wanted to know if anyone had tested the performance difference between any linux distros and Win7. Is either OS more efficient than the other at mining?

For that matter, is 64-bit any better than 32-bit?

Yes, mining on linux will give you a -little- fast result, result of the less overhead from linux. Don't think 86/64 makes a difference.

Care to quantify that? Does it reduce output by a percentage or just a set amount? I'm more familiar with windows (making a miner run on bootup, etc) so if the difference is negligible that would probably be the route I choose.

If Windows is what you know, I would definitely stick with Windows. Linux is my OS of choice but that's just because I am a Linux user/admin so it's where I am comfortable. Linux may have lower overhead but Windows does have advantages. Particularly, controlling the voltage and GPU/memory clocks is more flexible under Windows. You have things like afterburner which us Linux users currently lack. There are Linux solutions to be sure, they just are not as refined as their windows counterparts.

May I ask what MB/case into which you intend to cram a tripple 6990 rig? That's a lot of heat.

If there is something that could be quantifier, currently there is a bug in windows where multiple GPUs will cause a CPU core to be used per miner instance. This is certainly quantifiable in terms of watts then to dollars to whatever you wish. Capacity for more GPU per invested dollar in other equipment is another due to nature of OS. Miner performance differences are there as well I suppose, but not as absolute.

I'm going to be building a mining rig in a couple weeks (3x6990)

You won't be able to run 3 x 6990 on Windows. Windows only supports 4 GPUs.

No, I run 3x 5970 on Windows 7 64bit, It is work, maybe last drivers suppors more 4 GPUs now. And my second rig have 5 GPUs.

Windows has a virtual gpu core limit coded into it...

Please note that mining "in couple of weeks" will lower your income in BTC muuuuch muuuch more than any possible difference between Windows or Linux.

That's in CF, I don't think it matters if you are not going to build Crossfire setup (it is limited to 4 GPUs).
