NEW YORK (Reuters) - Honduras, one of the poorest countries in the Americas, has agreed to use a Texas-based company to build a permanent and secure land title record system using the underlying technology behind bitcoin, a company official said late Thursday.
Factom, a U.S. blockchain technology company based in Austin, Texas, will provide the service to the government of Honduras, the firm's president, Peter Kirby, said. The company is doing the project with Epigraph, a title software company that uses blockchain technology, also based in Austin.
Factom would not reveal the cost of the project. Honduras would become only the second government to use blockchain, which increases transparency in a transaction, to manage government data, after reports that the Isle of Man would test a government-run blockchain project.

All those retards are doing a good job in trying to separate blockchain from Bitcoin, to keep people away from investing on Bitcoin while it's cheap, so the whales can keep storing cheap as 200 USD a BTC coins until it goes ridiculously higher. Well, what can I say? most people seem to be more worried about keeping up with the Kardashians than learning why they must be learning about Bitcoin right now and owning at least 1, so fuck them, let us benefit while we can and rewarded since we weren't wasting our time, be it buying cheap BTC or both doing that and creating silly FUD posts to try to keep the price low for as long as possible.

Can someone explain to me (the non techy guy) how Nasdaq plans to play around using the blockchain without using bitcoin? Briefly, how does this work?

I know, but if it is "too late", in my mind that is just an interesting experiment in how the fee market will react. Of course it could slow down the whole adaption, which is bad, but it can't stop the project, nor can it open a window for competition.

So many #bitcoin startups are sprouting all over the place and it is going more and more mainstream day by day. It will only get better and better over the coming year. I see this coming year as being the tipping point for Bitcoin Prices to surge.

Look at a fine case with BFL, that supposedly was a good company in the 1st year, then now went all bad.

New York regulator issues final bitcoin rules

New York state issued on Wednesday its final rules for virtual currencies such as bitcoin, easing regulations on the type of companies that could apply for a license.

Benjamin Lawksy, superintendent of financial services for the state of New York, said the new digital currency rules known as the "BitLicense" will focus on overseeing financial intermediaries only. Lawsky made the remarks on Wednesday at the BITS Emerging Payments Forum in Washington.

"There is a basic bargain that when a financial company is entrusted with safeguarding customer funds and receives a license from the state to do so - it accepts the need for heightened regulatory scrutiny to help ensure that a consumer's money does not just disappear into a black hole," said Lawsky.

Payment startups disrupt traditional cash-transfer firms by offering nearly instantaneous, zero-cost services

One day last year, at the height of the Ukrainian revolution, Mark Howard spotted something interesting on television. In the background, a protester was holding up a poster with an instantly recognizable logo: A “B” with two vertical bars, the symbol for the digital currency bitcoin.

Mr. Howard is an American IT specialist and a self-described bitcoin enthusiast. He surmised that the poster’s QR code, which is a kind of square bar code, must contain the address of a bitcoin wallet belonging to the protesters. On a whim, he froze the frame, scanned the code with an app on his phone, and sent $10 worth of bitcoin to a country whose banks were paralyzed but whose protesters needed money to continue their fight. It happened instantly, and the total cost of the transaction was $0.02.

If using unregulated cryptocurrency to crowd-fund foreign revolutions sounds like a quintessentially 21st-century edge case, here’s a thing you need to know: The same fundamental technologies that enabled Mr. Howard’s impromptu act of foreign aid are being used by hundreds of other companies, in many countries, to do something that has never happened in the history of money: Exchange it at any distance, nearly instantaneously and for near-zero transaction fees.

We are just at the start of understanding what this will mean. The safe bet is that the easier it is to exchange money, the more of it will be exchanged, with obvious implications for economies that successfully integrate these technologies.

Working with other qualified institutional buyers, the company intends to sell a total of $25 million in digital bonds to trade on a cryptographically-protected distributed ledger – the same technology that underlies cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin.

Can the Greek government quickly introduce capital controls to stop people withdrawing money from their banks? Also, if Greece goes bankrupt can it legally force bank customers to pay the debts of their banks with their savings? I know lots of countries were discussing a plan to pass bankrupt banks debts onto their customers rather than governments bailing them out.

I'm a Canadian Bitcoin professional. A little while ago Decentral, where I work, was approached by a Senate staffer for assistance in placing a short message and a "proof of existence" into the blockchain on the release of their report about digital currencies. My colleague and I were happy to provide them with technical help. Today both that report and the blockchain message + proof of existence have been publicly released and included in block #361625, as can be verified at the above links.

In order to minimise blockchain bloat both the message and the document hash were embedded using OP_RETURN so that full nodes do not have to store the UTXO's in their mempool, as they are forced to with, for example, the aptly-named cryptograffiti approach. The use of OP_RETURN also ensures that these outputs can be pruned from disk storage by non-archival nodes in the future. Due to the small size permitted in OP_RETURN the message was split across three different transactions.
The document hash was embedded using the format from ProofOfExistence.com, though not through the site itself due to a need for clear association between the message and the document hash. To verify the proof of existence, download the file directly from the Senate link and hash it with the sha256 algorithm (for example using the "shasum" tool on linux). Compare the hexadecimal representation of the hash with the hexadecimal string located in the transaction at the "DOCUMENT HASH" link above (mouse over the "Proof of Existence" link on coinsecrets.org to see the hash). They should match!

Mostly for fun, and partly as a nod to the community, the Canadian Senate has embedded the message "Senate Banking Committee calls for light touch approach to regulation of Satoshi's invention" as well as a short cryptographic "timestamp" that will prove to later viewers the document existed at this particular point in time and has not been changed since.

As posted yesterday evening, this report is the one the Senate banking committee has been working on for quite some time, and in service of which Andreas Antonopoulos, along with many others, have testified before the committee. The conclusion reached by the committee seems to be a largely positive one, saying explicitly that the benefits of this technology outweigh the challenges it introduces and recommending a "light touch" in the regulatory department.

Yeah looks like we have another move up but we must break firstly $250 and next we need to break the highs of $260 after that if we make it past we'll probaly go right up to $300 without resistance.

There was a fairly big dump the last time we got near 260 but the price is slowly starting to creep up again. The next time we get near 250 there should be less profit takers prepared to dump. That should make it much easier to break above it the next time.

Puerto Rico’s governor, saying he needs to pull the island out of a “death spiral,” has concluded that the commonwealth cannot pay its roughly $72 billion in debts, an admission that will probably have wide-reaching financial repercussions.

The governor, Alejandro García Padilla, and senior members of his staff said in an interview last week that they would probably seek significant concessions from as many as all of the island’s creditors, which could include deferring some debt payments for as long as five years or extending the timetable for repayment.

“The debt is not payable,” Mr. García Padilla said. “There is no other option. I would love to have an easier option. This is not politics, this is math.”

It is a startling admission from the governor of an island of 3.6 million people, which has piled on more municipal bond debt per capita than any American state.

A broad restructuring by Puerto Rico sets the stage for an unprecedented test of the United States municipal bond market, which cities and states rely on to pay for their most basic needs, like road construction and public hospitals.

That market has already been shaken by municipal bankruptcies in Detroit; Stockton, Calif.; and elsewhere, which undercut assumptions that local governments in the United States would always pay back their debt.

Puerto Rico’s bonds have a face value roughly eight times that of Detroit’s bonds. Its call for debt relief on such a vast scale could raise borrowing costs for other local governments as investors become more wary of lending.

Perhaps more important, much of Puerto Rico’s debt is widely held by individual investors on the United States mainland, in mutual funds or other investment accounts, and they may not be aware of it.

Puerto Rico, as a commonwealth, does not have the option of bankruptcy. A default on its debts would most likely leave the island, its creditors and its residents in a legal and financial limbo that, like the debt crisis in Greece, could take years to sort out.

Some people only see what's in front of their nose. That's really dumb but thanks to them people like me can take most of the profit. I saw this coming ever since the weekly parabolic SAR flipped the side 5 weeks ago and that's what made me happy.

Digital currencies like bitcoin should be exempt from value-added tax (VAT), the legal adviser to the European Union's highest court said on Thursday, in a case that could set a rule across the bloc.

Sweden has asked the European Court of Justice to give it guidance on the tax status of bitcoin, to end legal uncertainty over the unit that is not backed or controlled by any government or central bank.

The Luxembourg-based court, set up to make sure EU law is applied equally across member states, is still considering the application but often follows the advice of its advocates-general.

The business of exchanging bitcoin for other currencies counted as a transaction which was exempt from duty under EU VAT regulations, Advocate General Juliane Kokott wrote in her opinion.

Bitcoin-focused businesses welcomed her view, though the court has not said when it will reach a final decision.

"It puts all bitcoin businesses onto solid legal grounds and recognizes bitcoin as a legitimate medium of payment," Tim Rehder, chief executive of London-based bitcoin marketplace Cubits, told Reuters.

Sweden approached the court after David Hedqvist, a bitcoin web-forum moderator, asked for a ruling on the issue in Sweden because he wanted to start selling the digital currency.

"We're happy that the advocate general shares our assessment and we hope that the EU court will share it as well," Hedqvist's lawyer Fredrik Berndt told Reuters.

A few countries have brought in legislation covering bitcoin, but have taken different approaches.

Australia has said transactions are liable to its goods and services tax, while Britain has made them exempt from VAT.

Bitcoin has just recorded its best month since May 2014, stealing the spotlight away from the blockchain technology that underpins it and which has been attracting investment from almost every major bank in the world.

An investor in bitcoin at the start of October would have enjoyed a return of over 36 percent, dwarfing the return of about 2 percent that the dollar racked up for its holders.

The web-based currency surged to its highest this year on Friday, hitting $334.05 on the Bitstamp exchange on its ninth successive day of gains, its best run in over two years.

Bitcoin is used as a vehicle for moving money around the world quickly and anonymously via the web without the need for third-party verification. That has made it controversial, but also attractive, to users ranging from drug dealers to those trying to circumvent capital controls in Greece and China.

Some bitcoin traders speculate that the latter might be partly responsible for the digital currency's latest surge. Most trading in the past month has come from Chinese bitcoin exchanges, according to Bitcoinity.org, though the accuracy of the Chinese exchanges' data is questioned.

"At a time of central bank currency devaluations, direct and indirect, and with gold's directionless behaviour over the last two years ... bitcoin is increasingly viewed and marketed as a possible investable vehicle," said London-based trader Ashraf Laidi, who invests in both fiat currencies and bitcoin.

Bitcoin is often dismissed as too volatile to invest in, having soared towards $1,200 in late 2013 before sliding to below $400 less than a month later, but it has stabilised this year.

"What I'm happy about so far is that the price run-up hasn't been overly dramatic or disorganised," said Peter Smith, CEO of Blockchain, a bitcoin "wallet" or storage provider, which shares its name with the technology.

EU RULING

Last week the European Union's top court ruled that bitcoin should be treated like any other means of payment and therefore be exempt from value-added tax - a decision many in the industry say helped push up bitcoin's price.

"It just makes bitcoin a lot more usable as a currency in Europe and also provides a lot of clarity to people who are speculating and trading in it," said Tom Robinson, co-founder of London-based bitcoin storage firm Elliptic.

Another reason for the price surge might be that bitcoin supply is set to grow more slowly.

The blockchain is secured by a network of computers that compete with each other to solve mathematical problems for a reward. That is currently 25 bitcoins every 10 minutes, but that will be halved to 12.5 bitcoins next year.

In the same way that scaling back quantitative easing would prop up a traditional fiat currency, bitcoin could be boosted by the conventional economics of supply and demand.

Although many say the technology behind bitcoin holds more potential than bitcoin itself and can function without it, bitcoiners argue that the blockchain supporting the currency is the only one to have been properly tested.

An increased focus on the technology is helping prop up the price, they say.

"The idea of blockchain and bitcoin are completely inseparable," said Michael Sonnenshein, a former JPMorgan banker who is now head of business development at Grayscale Investments, a New York-based bitcoin investment firm.

Money is flying out of China

On Monday, China's central bank reported $3.4 trillion in foreign exchange reserves, the lowest level since early 2013. November was one of the biggest drops ever.

Many investors are trying to get at least some of their money out of the country. Many Chinese see better opportunities abroad, whether it's real estate in New York or London, pricey art, or stocks and bonds in other countries.

Exact data is hard to come by from China, but Capital Economics forecasts that November set a record for people moving money out of China -- so-called capital outflows.

"Today's data suggest that capital outflows picked up sharply last month," says Julian Evans-Pritchard, chief China economist for research firm Capital Economics.

All the evidence suggests that money has been flowing out of the country at a rapid pace since August when China stunned the world with a surprise devaluation of its currency, the yuan.

The Chinese government simply declared that all of a sudden, the yuan was worth less.

That caused a major selloff in the Chinese stock market and worries that China's economy is slowing down even more than the government is letting on.

When money leaves China, it means people are trading their yuan for dollars, euros and other currency. That makes the yuan fall even further in value.
