Post by: RealBitcoin on May 16, 2015, 11:25:31 PM
Bitcoin website ban has just been lifted by a russian court, after the authorities started blocking bitcoin specific websites earlier this year

great news, i wonder if this is due to the fact that users could circumnavigate the ban, or just russia is accepting more bitcoin now

I think because Russia wants it will start to "accept" bitcoin, maybe it has find something if useful in this technology (not only about the economic part).

Maybe they just need some time to lift all the blocks? Or they have some other feature that is not allowed in Russia?

I`m not sure if the ban on the bitcoin itself has been lifted, remember the bitcon itself as a currency might be still banned.

However writing articles about it, and information about it isnt anymore. So while you can create your own news website in Russia, you cant actually own bitcoin.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legality_of_bitcoin_by_country#Russia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legality_of_bitcoin_by_country#Russia)

But then again, the next step would be to legalize bitcoin itself. And i`m sure in the nearby future they will legalize it too, there is no reason to ban it because it's a wonderful technology  ;)

Well this is hot news, it just came out yesterday. And you know how bureaucracy works, it might need a few days until they start unblocking them.

may I ask what is block of some website in some country? even I had network and technical background I really can't imagine this? it is like gov contacting major ISP and providing them set of addresses to deny?

anyway, I hope that Russians will unban in soon, in 2015 doesn't make sense to ban any website which is not openly illegal. period.

It means that if you write for example google.com in your browser it either redirects to a similar & gov approved website (like in china it goes to baidu)

Or just simply shows 404 error.

Yes the ISP is ordered to block that website for their customers, otherwise they get fined or worse. And citizens also are forbidden to go there.

Essentially, this also annuls the ruling that the dissemination of information on cryptocurrency, and Bitcoin in particular, within Russia is illegal.

...

It should also be noted that these hearings resulted in not only the unblocking of Russian websites, but also the international developers website bitcoin.org and the Bitcoin-wikipedia resource bitcoin.it, which will soon become accessible to users in Russia.

Good news to Russia.
Not only the websites, but news sites and newspaper can now say about it too.

Yes that is what I was saying, but i guess soon they will legalize Bitcoin itself too. No reason to write news about it, when those guys cant use it, its nonsense.

Their central bank also likes Bitcoin.

And in other places it's restricted.

So there is more to go!

Nice to know are now legal in Russia. The more areas of the world that become legal to use the better and bigger impact of it going more mainstream and getting back on track. Least if visiting Russia can now buy stuff over their and also use in shops that accept Bitcoin.

There has been a big shift in Russian to get the "world" away from using the US dollar.  I think they view it as a possibility that Bitcoin will help replace the US dollar, so they will risk it and allow Bitcoin to flourish there.

Maybe but i dont think the high ranking Russian officials know about Bitcoin yet, the court that lifted the ban was a minor court, and outside our Bitcoin community, not many other press covered this event.

So i guess 99% of Russians still dont know or care about Bitcoin, so if they want a popular Bitcoin there, then they should spread the word.

Well nations that makes such laws against people that already use bitcoin will find themselves instantly making millions of criminals.  Why would a nation do that?  Taxes?  Sure but it's not like grass roots crypto monetization will be a reality anytime soon and by the time it is, there will be a mechanism to pay governments for services just like any other service.
