Title: S5 problems - need help !!!
Post by: quaz on May 17, 2015, 07:46:33 AM
Hi Guys !
I just got a new S5 and have the following problem:
http://oldav.ro/econt/fish/s5.jpg
What's wrong in the setup? I am new to mining. PSU is 700w : EP-700 BR II with a 52.5 to 12V ( that is problem ?! ).
After several minutes, the LEDs of network interface are switched off, the fan goes into a low speed and the S5 stops responding to ping.
I really need help, if the equipment is damaged you have to send it back.
Thanks !!

check the software on SD card.  maybe reinstall if you bought used.

My File System Version is : Wed Jan 7 14:05:02 CST 2015. I must write SD-S5-20150415.tar.gz ?

Did you get it new from bitmain?

The PSU seems pretty cheap might try another one if you have it.  If that does not work look over here to check PCB- https://bitmain.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/204875015-How-to-diagnose-S5-hashing-PCB

And if still nothing I would look into flashing with firmware.  A example of that is here - https://bitmain.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/203559969-My-S5-hashes-at-about-600GH-S

Is new, this is :
http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Bitcon-Miner-Antminer-S5-1TH-Asic-Miner-1150GH-Super-Btc-Miner-Better-Than-Dragon-Miner-and/32276494932.html
Tomorrow I will try with a source of 62.5 A at 12 V.
I do not understand why ASIC status is OK, why the temperature is zero and no hashing ?
Must try to write SD-S5-20150415.tar.gz ?

I would not say new from aliexpress.  The seller bought it from bitmain and have been running it.  Technically you bought from third party seller.  From their pictures it could be as old as January.   Also they are using a higher quality power supply then you were, they are using a gold COUGAR-GX cannot tell watts though from angle.

I would try a nicer PSU and see if any better luck.  And if that does not work look at two guides I posted.

That's what I do. Do you think I have a result if i write and SD-S5-20150415.tar.gz?

Honestly I cannot say as I am not there looking at it.    But i would follow the two guides in https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1063189.msg11398830#msg11398830 .

The first one is very good about checking cables making sure they are right (I have a feeling they are, but does not hurt to check).    The second one is dealing with flashing firmware and one reason I like it is that makes sure to check keep settings (makes your life easier).

And I still think PSU could be worth trying nicer one if that does not do it.  If you have a nicer PSU sitting around I would actually try it first.

I would try another pool as first pool. And S1 and S3 had similar problems when I changed pool/worker settings and didn't boot them.

Good catch that is a odd port on the first one aswell.  Here is a link to Bitmain's antpool: https://antpool.com/home.htm

Man, why don't you buy directly from Bitmain?..

In any strange case firstly try to reflash the firmware. It should not harm your miner, but in many cases can help.  ;)

I wrote last firmware but still nothing happens.
I think I have no enough power. I read that the PSU should have at least 60A on 12V. Tomorrow or after tomorrow i will put a higher source.
Please explain to me what is the meaning and connection between the following terms: local work, getworks and discarded.
At this time, asic status shows "o" on all the chain1 with 26grd temperature and "-" on all the chain2 temperature 0.
I tested chain1 , but i dont test chain2 because i dont have right tools.

The "o" is good it means the chip is in working order.  If you see "x" there its bad and you might have a bad chip.

Can yo take a picture of configuration page?

Of course, but what configuration ? Miner configuration ?

Yes so we can see how pools are entered.  Antpool works great so just trying to really sure you have it in right.

i put the latest firmware, and i have 350 frequency. If the new PSU dont solve the problem, i think the S5 is broken.

I believe problem on PSU, buy good PSU like corsair, seasonic or evga at least 750 watt.

i would either try a lower clock or test 1 board at a time buy unplugging the white cable and not plugging the pcie power in. my half working s5 pulls ~320-340 watts at the wall when clocked at 350 when hooked up to a 850 watt server psu. This way you can see if its your psu or something with the miner.

I had the same problem. ZERO temperature means that power system of hash board failed - either too high frequency or low voltage, but it can be also big trouble of ASIC broken. Do the following:

set freq to 100MHz and check if it changes anything.

1) the boards should at least try to work, so you can see either GH/s or HW errors. If so, try highest stable frequency, if the frequency is higher than 300MHz, use better PSU (lucky case). If stable frequency is lower, you can start with RMA, at least one of ASIC was overheated and is malfunctioning.

2) still zero temperature at 100MHz? You can safely RMA your boards, at least TWO ASICs are unsoldered due to critical overheat.

Reason why ASICs show ooo is because Vdd voltage (compute cores) is stringed and failed, but Vpll has different circuit, so it thinks that ASICs are running.

Looks like a cheap PSU.  Do you have any other PSU you can try to use instead of it?

Only for testing, i try to see if working with 70A on 12V.

That's a waste, if you had money to waste, then just buy good brand PSU.

I want only 1 min to see hashing... Then, i buy  a good PSU !!

Nailed it... many don't worry about it but many will not work without 3 pools.

Other thing is, the PSU should be at least 50Watts (80 Plus Gold) more than what is recommended, 100watts if you intend to overclock.

GigaBit, what is your opinion about 60A on 12V ? My S5 dont work on 700w PSU ( and 52.5A on 12V).
