Title: Bitparking PPCoin Exchange [closing]
Post by: doublec on September 07, 2012, 10:00:01 AM
See my message here (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=106356.msg1747208#msg1747208) for details on the closing of the exchange:
Quote
Recent events have shown that running an exchange is way to risky and stressful to me in the current alt coin climate. Prices have risen to a point where I'm not comfortable I can provide a reasonable level of service. To this end I'm closing the exchange and encourage all users to move to vircurex. The following details are on the exchange site:
Quote
2013-04-05: The Bitparking exchange is closing down. I've decided the risk involved in dealing with the current high prices for the alt coins has moved from the 'fun hobby' level the exchange originally started with and requires a more serious approach to operation. I've been in contact with the Vircurex exchange and I encourage all existing customers to move their funds and continue trading their.

The exchange will close trading Friday 5 April 2013 22:00 and new deposit addresses will not be able to be created. Trading operations will also be disabled. Withdrawals will be available for a few days after that at which point the exchange will close and all funds sent to their emergency withdrawal address. Withdrawal fees are removed during this period. Thanks for using the exchange and enjoy a better and more professional experience at Vircurex.

Any chance of being able to add PPCoin to mergemining?

It would be better than having to use failover or rotate with cgminer.

It's not possible to merge mine PPCoin with bitcoin. The PPCoin designers did not add this functionality (by design) and making the changes to the coin would not be network compatible with existing PPCoin miners. A pool could probably merge mine PPCoin with the other alt coins (Namecoin, etc) if they added the appropriate patches to PPCoin though since this is generally network compatible.

Hi doublec,
Thanks a lot for the effort. If you plan to use checkpoint to confirm deposit as you mentioned earlier please let me know when you implement it. I will update you of any planned checkpoint policy change.
Current checkpoint policy is on every proof-of-work block and up to 4 hours for consecutive proof-of-stake blocks. This policy is expected to last at least through 2nd month of ppcoin network.
Central checkpoint is best effort as it may experience down time. Rule of thumb is block chain is solidified up to where you see with getcheckpoint RPC call.
  Best Regards,

I recall doublec saying he wouldn't open another exchange for alternative cryptocurrencies unless of course he thought it would survive the long term. Great ppc exchange.

PPCoins are also being traded at http://exchange.zapto.org/ as well  :)

No they are on different servers and have different wallets.

I'm trialing a PPCoin exchange at https://ppcexchange.bitparking.com. It works similar to my  namecoin and litecoin exchanges. If you register please include an emergency PPC and BTC withdrawal address when prompted so the exchange can refund coins if it needs to close.

The deposit addresses are permanent - they don't change and you can send to them multiple times - which is different from how my namecoin exchange operates.

What code are you running for your exchange? Is it open source in anyway?

It's custom code written by me in the Ur/Web (http://www.impredicative.com/ur/) programming language. It's not open source at this stage.

It is instant, unless the amount is unusually large, or empties the exchanges hot wallet. I don't see any pending withdrawals so I assume you got the funds. If not, PM me your username, the amount, and the address you were withdrawing too and I'll take a look.

I think there's a slight bug on the withdrawal of PPC, if i copy / paste the max withdrawal amount it states to me, im left with 0.009 in my account :) I think the withdrawal for fee, that's coded is 10 times too small, as opposed to the one given to the user on the page.

I just sold my PPC for BTC and now I am attempting to withdraw my BTC and I seem to be unable to do so. I enter my BTC address, I copy and paste the stated max withdrawal amount, click withdraw and nothing happens. My balance remains the same and there is no pending withdrawal.

Any help?

PM me or email admin@bitparking.com:

* The exchange you used (PPC)
* Your account name
* The amount you tried to withdraw
* The browser and version you are using.

With that information I can track down what's happening.

Yes, I made a small PPC deposit to try the exchange out for the first time. I didn't see anything posted anywhere about a minimum withdrawal limit.

I have 185 more PPC in bitparking right now and a few hundred more in my wallet. I want to know that the site works before I go placing all of my coins there.

Fair enough, I guess. But most sites have a mininum of 0.1 BTC or even 1 BTC to withdraw, to my knowledge.

If that's all it is then that's not a problem and I'll be happy to continue using the site, but I think the site owner should put the minimum withdrawal limit somewhere on the deposit page, the withdrawal page or both.

Turns out I'm an idiot and it DOES say the min withdrawal is 0.01:

"The maximum amount you can withdraw is 0.00000000 due to the withdrawal fee of 0.00100000 bitcoins to cover transaction costs. Enter a receiving address and amount to withdraw. The minimum withdrawal amount is 0.01000000."

I apparently stopped reading JUST before the last sentence, lol....

It's 6 confirmations plus up to 90 seconds depending on how long it takes for the process that polls to check for the 6 confirmations wakes up. How many confirmations are you at?

You bitcoins won't be sent because they can't be sent to a litecoin address. The error message is due to the send bailing out trying to send to an invalid address:

checkpointing should protect you from reorgs beyond 5, so you should be fine even at six confirms. Without checkpoints, even ten wouldn't help much btw.

I'm aware that without checkpointing the number of confirmations don't matter if someone has a large ability to mine blocks. I've increased the current number of confirmations to allow for time for the checkpoint's to be broadcast.

There's an API to find out the current checkpointed block so at some point I'll change to using that so the number of confirmations varies based on that.

Fair enough, it's strange to have to accept a SSL certificate to access a public web API :) but I guess it works.

Am I reading Withdraw section correctly:

----------
Withdraw PPCoins

The maximum amount you can withdraw is 0.00000000 due to the withdrawal fee of 0.01000000 bitcoins to cover transaction costs. Enter a receiving address and amount to withdraw. The minimum withdrawal amount is 0.01000000.

----------

To withdraw 0.01PPC one needs to pay a fee of 0.01BTC?

Ah, I didn't notice this :)

Probably just a copy/paste bug.  It's the same on Bitparking trc exchange.

I've done trading there and it's really 0.01 PPC fee (network fee)...

Recent events have shown that running an exchange is way to risky and stressful to me in the current alt coin climate. Prices have risen to a point where I'm not comfortable I can provide a reasonable level of service. To this end I'm closing the exchange and encourage all users to move to vircurex (https://vircurex.com).

Really sorry to hear doublec, your exchange was actually my favourite :( well with BTC-e about to take on trc and PPC suppose things are getting pretty serious.

Anyone need a vircurex referal link for cheaper fees on trading the here https://vircurex.com/welcome/index?referral_id=45-2213

Also can i just confirm as it been a number of months since i setup my account on TRC and PPC on your exchanges.... I take itthat the emergency withdraw addys were required for both BTC and the altcoin upon registration? I'll probably just wait for automatic withdraws if thatthe case as i'm off for a week as of today and access to wallets not going to be as easy, but don't want funds to get lost in the shutdown.

again sorry to see u go :( keep up the excellent pool mining work though please :)

Yes, there was an address for both registered. For my users that don't have an emergency address I'll leave something up to enable them to withdraw their coins. I just did a run through of the PPC, TRC and LTC exchanges to make sure the hot wallets are topped up. Don't panic if the withdraw doesn't go through, the hot wallet may have dropped low and I'll top it up.

Why don't you sell the exchange instead of closing it down ?

I'm sure someone would pay you a good fee for it

That's really a shame, I liked your exchanges a lot and a few of them seemed to get a decent amount of volume and were my favorite places to trade alt-coins. Would you be interested in selling your whole set-up - or maybe continuing on with a partner? I would definitely be interested, please contact me if you think there's any chance you'd be interested too.

Vircurex is closed for up to a few days according to the twitter post while he upgrades to a dedicated server.

He must have been running it on a VPS or even worse, shared hosting.

I am a bit sad to see you shutdown your projects in the alt-coin world.

Your PPC exchange and pool really helped PPC in its infancy.

I can see where you are coming from. I have learned that projects of this type are much more work then most realize.

I wish you the best of luck and look forward to your future endeavors.

Do you have a link to this? If it's closed for a few days I'll keep my exchange open in the meantime until it reopens. I'd still recommend people not keep funds on the exchange though and transfer as needed.

Not only that.. if what used to be a couple hundred bucks of day worth of coins now becomes THOUSANDS... he doesnt want to take that risk and be "the next guy who had some sucky exchange that got hacked and lost people money"

he's getting out before bad things happen, and while it is sad espescially to see the pool close, it is understandable.

Exactly. It's gone from being able to cover something going wrong out of pocket to serious money that users financial stability depends on (from emails about the namecoin exchange I'm getting) very quickly. Were I to get into exchanges again I think it'd just be writing software and let someone else actually run/manage it. The software is the most interesting part for me anyway.

Sad to see the end of this. PPC will miss you! :'(

For how long will users be able to withdraw their coins? Bearing in mind not everyone will read about the closure on the forums or check the Bitparking site, and even if they did not everyone has offline wallets, not everyone will know without logging in what their addresses are on Vircurex (which may be closed till next week), and I don't think there's a way to add a emergency withdrawal address after you have first set up the account so many people will not have been able to do so.

I'll keep the exchange operating for a couple of extra days to give Vircurex a chance to get back up. Once I close the trading engine I'll keep it up for withdrawals for a while then process the emergency withdrawal address. After that I'll have some simple interface for withdrawals operating until the exchange is empty. Worse case people can email admin@bitparking.com if they can't reach the site and I'll sort it out.

Just as a reminder doublec I'd be happy to buy the services you're shutting down and take them over (or see someone else do the same) if that's something you'd consider. Or just support the exchanges and work with you. I definitely don't want to see them go away!

I sent you a PM as well, if you're not interested then kindly let me know and RIP bitparking exchanges!

I fully understand the reasons. But an improvement of security could be an alternative to shutdown the exchanges. Like demanding a code sent to the email to be entered for withdrawing (like bitcoin-24.com).
Well, if the decision is final, I hope you can sell the exchanges to someone trustworthy. I spent large amounts of bitcoins at your exchanges and I'll miss them.

Is he leaving all altcoins or just some of them? Doesn't make sense to open source it if he is going to still run the namecoin exchange. It's also in a weird language he said so I doubt it's very applicable to most people.
