Title: What are the important open source apps and projects for Bitcoin?
Post by: adrian33 on May 30, 2011, 01:06:28 PM
Hi there, I'm preparing a blog post on important (or useful) applications within the bc ecosystem.

What would you suggest I include?

I suppose this thread could be in place of the blog post.

http://www.bitcoinlinks.com/

This site just went up the other day.  Bitcoinlinks.com is a nice resource itself, and it may lead you to others.

I'd say ANY organization that is accepting bitcoins for goods at this point is important to the economy.  https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Trade

I would imagine that the browser based miners could be great thing for financing low cost online services.

Behold! A browser-based pooled miner that runs in the background of your website! http://bitp.it/

Yeah - I think it has much potential.  It just needs to overcome the first negative reaction a la: what you use my computer to mine bitcoins for you!!!?  Unfortunately this spreads very aggressively on twitter - the idea that this could be the solution to the problem of financing the press is much too subtle for that medium.

Web based mining - as solution for subsidize site owner, is not so good idea, really.
1) Lots of people using mobile devices, and they will be afraid by extra battery drain, even more than by adds.
2) Webmining, by itself, can not be source of  income that we can call, anyhow significant. (thats most important part)
3) If (somehow), that idea will spread, users will start to block immediately, any suspected script.
4) That will not add to your users some warm and fuzzy filling towards you,  just the opposite.

If you want to experiment with that - allow user to choose, in clear and easy form, did he wish to distribute in that way.
