Title: Electricity savings?
Post by: sandy56 on May 19, 2015, 03:21:25 PM
Currently, I have one graphics card doing mining.

If I add a second graphics card, is there much of an electricity savings?

LOL. I think I should have asked this differently in terms of cost per hash.

The computer runs all the time no matter how many graphics cards there are so the cost per hash should drop for additional cards.

I was just wondering about how much.

Get a watt meter and measure your computer with the card mining and without.
That difference is a rough approximation of the energy usage of your card.
So adding another cards would increase you usage with that amount, roughly.

Computer uses 50-100watts at idle. GPUs you add are discrete, each one uses an N amount of watts. Up to you to figure out how much each GPU uses, as it varies depending on voltage, voltage table, algorithm, and other factors.

Make sure that you factor in tiered electricity if you have it.  The more I use the more it costs per unit, and you will be in for a rude surprise if it is the same in your area.

Your electricity consumption will increase, however this can be a misleading indicator of profitability since you can still make more profit with 2 GPUs.
Lets simplify it a bit. The electricity consumption can be represented as a result from 2 different sources,
  • GPU
  • Rest of the system

Let's say that the GPU uses 100W and the rest of the system 250W, summing at 350W. Now, if you add a second GPU, the system will still use 250W, however you will have 2x100W for the 2 GPUs. Hence the overall power consumption is 250+(2x100)=450W. So you have increased your power consumption by 100W, however, if you look at the "useless" consumption - everything apart from the GPUs can be considered useless, as you are only running them so that the GPU runs and mines you coins - percentage wise it only makes up 56% compared to 71% before. Hence you are wasting less power with 2 cards than with one.

Looking at the overall increase in power consumption, using a second (identical) GPU doubles your income, but your electricity consumption has only increased by ~30%.

Please note that this was only a simplified example to explain how your profit and electricity consumption would change. In order to calculate this for your own situation, you have to know exactly the power consumption of your system and that of your GPUs. Please calculate it accurately before investing.

The above is a good example. It is a good idea to run the maximum number of GPUs in a system so that the system energy use is a small percentage of total (system+GPUs).

unfortunately for you, at this day n age it is impossible to earn profits with gpu mining you would want to buy a bitcoin miner even the ntakes around 6 months break even unless u get it really cheap price.! good luck tho

If  u add second card u will see just double profit of ur single card . Electricity will be higher comsumption!

We are in the altcoin section, so I'm pretty sure sandy56 is mining some kind of altcoin.

as i said this before, the more electricity you use , your profit goes down
