Title: POLL: Facebook Connect & BitCoin
Post by: darbsllim on May 30, 2011, 05:56:33 PM
Would you use facebook connect to register for a website which gives you free bitcoins?

Or would you prefer the website have it's own registration process?

Well bitcoin isn't *really* anonymous.

Also, in order for bitcoin to be appealing to the masses, we have to make it comfortable.

Most internet users trust Facebook registration over independent registration, especially when it's something they are unsure about like bitcoin.

Thoughts?

Well, you're talking about Faucet, right? So just ask Gavin.

It s to early to speek about it.
Lots of current users prefer to stay anonimous. With except of special situations (they are running some service, or some developers)
Bitcoin have anough "pseudoanonimity" , to stay anonimous.
You not mentioned Google login by the way.

People on Facebook would give you all their personal information for access to a cartoon pig. Why even bother offering them bitcoins?

They are the people who must use Bitcoins on a regular basis for it to be successful.

Yes I would and in many cases I would prefer it to a separate registration due to convenience and assurance of a certain level of security.

It would definitely raise BTC awareness among the less technologically adept.  Not sure i, personally, would do it, but i think the idea has worth.

I tried poking the sleeping bear by posting a question about bitcoin on "the Face" and got nothing but crickets... wait, there weren't even any crickets.

I probably wouldn't use FB connect myself, but it is a good idea.  Speedy, easy registration, and makes bitcoin more friendly for the uninitiated.

A flood of Noobs is exactly what Bitcoin needs if it is to succeed.  Noobs make up the majority of the world's population, so i don't see what we have to gain by excluding them.

Typical joe/jane:  I can't wait for a facebook application that allows me to transfer to my friend with my blackberry with btc's to make up for my share of the bill at the restaurant.  The app writer, as well as the person who referred me to this convenient method to transfer btc's to my friend can take a small fee on the transaction - as well.  I'm not interested in running a client - because i don't even mine on my blackberry.  I just want to give to my friends sometimes, easily on facebook with no complicated addresses - just their facebook names please!!!

Aren't you asking a poll from an audience (technical) who would not necessarily be your entire user base?  Is ease/simplicity important for the technically inclined?

I would rather get the facebook users in another way rather than go through facebook.

How would you propose going about if they are an audience to the facebook platform?

Well I personally hate creating new accounts, but though Facebook....? Ehhhhh.....

If you are asking if it will be successful? Go for it. It will. I personally don't like it, but the fact is that it will generate new users effectively.

Why not Google Authentication? Sure they do the same data mining as Facebook, but I do trust them more.

Some of you just do NOT seem to be able to get past your hatred of all things Facebook. And I suppose that's fine, but at some point there's going to have to be a Bitcoin presence on Facebook. There's no other good way to reach that crowd, and that crowd are the ones who Bitcoin is ultimately going to have to bring on board if the currency is to be successful.

The Facebook userbase != the Facebook platform.  Creating a presence on Facebook is far far different than allowing Facebook to auth every connection to your highly secure bitcoin trading/retail/information site.
