Title: New administrator: Stefan Thomas
Post by: theymos on September 09, 2012, 01:18:58 AM
Stefan Thomas (justmoon) is now a forum administrator. He can therefore access the database directly and see IP addresses, etc. Operator of We Use Coins and BitcoinJS.org, Stefan Thomas is a long-time Bitcoin user who is highly trusted by the community.

Thanks for helping out!

I would pay money to read the threads in there about me.....even if only for a few minutes ;)

Anyway, congrats and welcome to Stefan Thomas !

Thanks for the warm welcome! As a user of the Bitcoin forums I've always had a lot of respect for the amazing job the staff has been doing, so I'm very much honored to become a part of this team and I'm looking forward to working with all of you! :)

For those who are wondering what I'll be doing exactly: My primary responsibility is to be available to take up admin duties when theymos is away. Other than that I may do the occasional standard moderating if I happen to be first on the scene. If there are any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to PM me. For those attending the London conference next week, I'm going to be there as well of course, so feel free to say hi! :D

In another thread you said that database dumps can be downloaded by other admins, but only you, Gavin, Satoshi and Sirius can decrypt them.
What does "direct database access" refer to? Any admin can query the db directly and e.g. dump it and/or read PMs?

It's not about ST being an admin now; it's just a general question which popped up in my mind when I read this announcement.

For the longest time, I though smart1986 was an admin, because his profile used to look like this:

Smart1986
Admin
Mybitcointrade.com

Global moderators can download the encrypted database backups. Admins and past admins (Gavin, Satoshi, Sirius, me, and now justmoon) can decrypt them -- they therefore have complete access to the database and can read PMs, etc. Justmoon and I can also query the live database.

Two. Gavin recently decided to stop being an admin.

Mr. Thomas, BitcoinJS brings me a lot of joy as a concept and as a very real future.

Welcome. It's good to see your brilliance on this forum.

Does this mean that the Cosby hackers, who had access to Satoshi's account, could have read our PMs?

Have Satoshi's powers been revoked after the Cosby incident? What about Sirius?

Yes. I mentioned this at the time.

Both of them are no longer administrators, though they can decrypt forum backups using their PGP keys. Satoshi's forum account can't be accessed anymore -- I reset the password to a random one after the Cosby hack.

Firstly welcome Stefan,
Also does the donate page require an update now? Due to their being a change in the admins.
