Can't really help you on where to start, but I would advise you to look at alt-coin pools instead.
It will be extremely difficult for you to compete with the established Bitcoin pools.

Just my 2 c.

I would say that if you need to ask then you might want to think about buying some equipment and joining an existing pool.  I imagine that it might not be a one man show to start a pool.  You will need talented partners to help you out.

Just a suggestion:  If you do start a pool try and make something unique about it that differentiates it from other pools.  Lower %, auto coin switching algos, idk, but look at what others offer and find the gap.  Then fill it.

So do you make 10-20% a day or is that your goal?  If you actually make that much then grats, its a huge profit to take each day.  Stick with it and soon you will be rich :)  ANd if you have any tips for us let us know.

If you are not making that much, keep in mind that many investors feel 10-20% a YEAR is a good investment return.  Getting that every day might be really hard to do.  Don't risk everything and play it safe.  You can lose it fast in altcoins if you are not careful.

You shouldnt start a pool if you dont know where to start, its a big responsibility and you might put at risk people's money (mining rewards) if you dont not handle the pool security properly.

You can't just throw your money somewhere and have a BTC pool started, there's a fair amount of knowledge required in running one. If you're looking to start one to mine on, I'd recommend you simply decide to use one of the already-up mining pools. If you're really determined then you're going to have to do your own research in all fairness.

That's really the main one IMHO where he's using Ubuntu. If you find Ubuntu too complex or you aren't prepared to invest enough time to install Ubuntu onto something like a VPS, then you shouldn't be considering running a pool. That's like those people who run Minecraft servers off their 1GB RAM PC from 2006, except 10x worse considering the fact it's a Bitcoin mining pool that's much, much more serious.

Here is some starting points to run your bitcoin/altcoin pool - read open source pool's documentation:

MPOS (https://github.com/MPOS/php-mpos) - old classic pool software. Python stratum + MySQL for shares storing.

NOMP (https://github.com/zone117x/node-open-mining-portal) - efficient, highly scalable, all-in-one, easy to setup cryptocurrency mining pool written entirely in Node.js, shares are inserted into Redis (a fast NoSQL key/value store).

Powerpool (https://github.com/simplecrypto/powerpool) ideal for merge mining multiple auxilury (merge mined) blockchains. Uses Redis or RabbitMQ to log shares and statistics for miners.

Its a big responsibility and technical implementation. If you have no idea on it then better go for other choice, or financially help a project. Anyways here is some video parts you can refer.
