Title: Will you ever buy a Bitcoin Magazine issue again?
Post by: Spekulatius on September 09, 2012, 05:54:12 PM
Hi B-People,

After Matthew N. Wright, a member of this community famous for both trolling and starting the "Bitcoin Magazine" has been officially labeled a "SCAMMER" by the forum administrators for taking and not keeping bets about 80k+ BTC (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=101751.0) that Pirateat40 would pay out lenders after the dafault of BS&T the future of his brainchild the "Bitcoin Magazine" is in jeopardy. Some poeple have already announced never to buy a single issue anymore repelled by Matthew's actions. Do you think those thoughts are justified and Mathew has inflicted irreversible damage on the whole Bitcoin Magazine project, left alone his own reputation or do you think whatever he does should not be projected on the Magazine?

For me it depends entirely on what the promised announcement from Bitcoin Magazine is. If Matthew gets kicked out from that project I will certainly continue supporting the magazine.

My decision to buy or not buy more copies of Bitcoin Magazine will depend only on how much I like #2 and #3 when they finally arrive.

They will need to not only get rid of Matthew, but publically distance themselves from him in some sort of announcement.

Also, they would have to have an actual publishing schedule instead of coming out whenever they feel like it.

+1.  I would actually purchase a subscription if they do this.

Actually, I just ordered issues #1,2, and 3 after it was announced on reddit (http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/zkshs/bitcoin_is_alive_and_kicking_bitcoin_magazine/) that #3 is now on bookshelves.

I think the bitcoin magazine would be more desirable without Matthew N. Wright independently from the outcome of the pirate-bet-episode.

He's a jerk, to the point I don't care what he has to say. Sad but true.

It's a shame that MNW is involved with so many businesses. But then again, this opens up new opportunities for businesses to fill the gaps.

I suspect that a lot of ppl will change their minds if Bitcoin Magazine pays Matthew's debt. Is it possible to add such an option into the poll?

I won't change my mind just because someone else decided to cover his debts.

No, I will not. And the reason isn't Matthew not paying the bet he lost. The reason is the lame excuse he used.

Im open to suggestions. If more people demand additional options of whatever kind, I'll add them to the poll.
Also, votes can at all times be changed in order to make this poll an kind of up to date representation of the public opinion.

I hadn't heard of Bitcoin magazine until I saw Matthew's bet post, so I probably wouldn't have purchased it online anyways. However, If I had seen the magazine in B&N I definately would have picked it up. After today's outcome though, I don't want anything to do with projects tied to Matthew.

To be honest I don't think I'm in the demographic for this magazine as basically everything there would be old news to me by the time I'd get to receive it. Or most of it.

I thought it could be a good way to introduce people to bitcoin, but I have no idea how good are the contents and being connected to scammers I'd rather stay away.

The news is of course old, but the content is original and well written. Some articles explain in detail what you could only find in scraps all over the internet. Most of those articles sum complicated topics up or give account of people interviewed. I therefore find it interesting to read the magazine although I picked up on all the major news on reddit or bitcointalk already.

A VERY VERY important point needs to be made.

BITCOIN MAGAZINE DOES NOT = MNW.

just bought all three issues, and i might subscribe too it if i like them ....

The silly Bet doesn't (or shouldn't) affect MNW's abilities to write (or whatever he dies == dies (silly damn mac autocorrect) --> my mac is going wild here  ..... it wants to write that.... it must know something that i don't :P) :)

Why then so many ppl think that Matthew has ruined its image?

Because he is the most outspoken employee of the publication.

It has nothing to do with the publication being "his".

There are many many people making Bitcoin Magazine the success it is today..

Matthew has of course helped, but to pin the entire success of the magazine on his shoulders is ludicrous.

Well, I'm not the kind of person who reads stuff he already knows because it's written in an interesting way. For me, it's been many years I don't find magazines in general worth paying for, with just a few exceptions which include scientific journals and some very good research like sometimes one can find in National Geographic or The Economist. But even then, seldom.

I'd have got a few for family members and friends. But then again I'd really like to be able to see the quality of the contents and if a scammer like Matthew is involved in any way I wouldn't want to support it.

I'm in the same boat as you, but I would have bought this magazine to support Bitcoin ventures and to promote Bitcoin to the less familiar. However, the second I heard Matthew was involved, that was the end of that. How good the product is is not relevant; I will never support him or his ventures.

About the quality of the content: Just pick up an issue when you have the chance to and take a look, it might actually interest you ;)

It would be better to rebrand the magazine to get rid of any relations with Matthew...

I won't do this, as I explained. It has nothing to do with the content. And I'm well enough informed to write most of their articles, already. I spend a lot of time promoting Bitcoin. Before I put him on ignore I saw Matthew spend most of his time doing his best to destroy this forum and business ventures he wasn't personally involved with.

I will not support him or any business he's involved with. I'll get along fine without them, I'm fairly sure.

Not that I know of. You can order it by mail though. The main editorial department seems to be in the UK. I think outside the US the UK are the first destinations where the issues are shiped to. (Takes ages to Germany though)

So you are suggesting that I buy it to try it even after I told you I'm most likely not the right demographic for it. Anyway if I bought it, it wouldn't be for me but then again Matthew is involved so no chance.

Pirateat40

At least this way there is a better chance for victims to get their  bitcoins back because he would be more well known.

No , I would be more likely to purchase an online subscription to quality content.

I'm already spending an unhealthy amount of time reading about bitcoin.  These last months reading anything off this forum is bad for your brain.

Still I wish money I spend could be used to finance physical copy.

This has inspired me to buy copies of bitcoin magazine.
