All investments are bets. At some point, Matthew started advertising his bet as a hedging instrument against Pirate's default. That's when he allegedly violated securities law. I'd love to see that tested in court though. Not sure why people here think it would be bad for bitcoin. On the other hand if you avoid paying tax on your coins then you cant use them imho. They often beat up and robbed and/or flat out murdered dudes protected by the other cops, if you wanted them to actually DO something, you had to pay them more, and their charges were pretty much whatever they decided.
