Title: Would that work ?
Post by: OmegaStarScream on May 31, 2015, 07:48:01 AM
Please don't laugh , I may be wrong and don't know anything about this  :-\
We all know that we should have an unedited post or private message here on Bitcointalk with our Bitcoin adress so we can verify by a signed message , right ?

But would this work for example ? I mean if someone added his adress to that thread "Stake your Bitcoin adress" here and someone quoted his post , wouldn't be easier if we send theymos like 0.001  BTC or something to proove that we own that adress ? instead of signing etc ... ?

just wondering ;D because it seem to make sense ? because all we need to do is proove that we have the adress i guess

Signed message will reduce theymos' works and it will increase the speed of account retrieval unless there is something complicated. That's why, signed message is preferred. Sending BTC from that address can also do but that will be time consuming and your chance of retrieval will be low.

Signed message is still the best way to prove that you have the control over the user because the address that you used to put in the "stake your bitcoin address" could be compromised and can be easily used to send some money too. Also, it would reduce a lot of work for theymos because he will just check if the signed message is true plus it's free.

Someone could trick you into sending 0.001BTC to theymos in order to steal your account. They could lie and tell you the bitcoin address belongs to them. It's pretty hard to trick someone into signing a specific message.

lol :o true , wondering how I didn't think about that .
However I don't think people will fall on such tricks if theymos make a sticky thread about the idea I just mentioned , but yeah you got a point.

There should be other methods to get my account back as I don't like the signing message thing. If the account is not sold after getting hacked, an email address and IP address should be enough proof to prove that it's your account.

People who hacked account may also hack email but chance for getting private key of the user is low.

IP Address won't be a nice way as many people have Dynamic IPs which keep on changing whenever Modem is restarted.

Wallets as well can be hacked and if a person loses access to his original BTC address, they cannot prove that they own their BCT account. Hence there should be another way to prove ownership.

PGP key is another way. Email can be used but it is less secure IMHO.

And it would have people using same IP.  I know this site is blocked i China.  But I do know people  from there who still come to the froums. They use proxy's or vpn to get to this site.

But with vpn and proxy it is possible for multiple to have the same ip. I don't see security for here going down that route.

Sending bitcoins from an address doesn't necessarily prove you own it, just that you were able to get a certain amount sent from it. In general it would probably be okay and work, but for high value targets it would certainly be worth it to take the time and effort to trick them. There are many creative ways to get someone to send a small amount of btc to an address for you.

on most of the times , sending a certain amount from your adress does proove that you own it . unless you don't have a password on your wallet or someone is on your house or whatever . but yeah I agree on what you said in general .
thanks for all your answers guys , I guess I will just close the thread now . ;)
