Title: The effect of latency
Post by: Sjalq on May 31, 2011, 09:20:46 AM
Hi guys,

Is there a significant effect that either latency or bandwidth has on group mining?

yes, you have more stale shares

How does latency affect the mining process? You finish a block but in the same period someone else finishes the block and reports it before hand?

What is an acceptable latency and to what point do I measure it?

you submit shares, they turn into a block eventually, but because you lag behind, more are being rejected and in rare occasions you can make an invalid block

acceptable, well it depends on pool taxes, you could live with 180ms and 0,5% tax, 99% uptime versus 70ms and 2%, 99,9% uptime

The latency I experience with the pool I currently mine at is anywhere from 300-600ms.  I find increasing the askrate helps a but but I do get about 3-4% stale shares.
