Title: Bitnation's semi official space agency...
Post by: commandrix on June 04, 2015, 10:51:18 PM
You find the darndest things by chance. The Bitnation/Spacechain Space Agency (http://ablogaboutnothinginparticular.com/?p=3880) is planning to send a balloon into the stratosphere and that's just the beginning of what they want to do. What do you guys think?

so, what is it going to do. i mean what is the relationship between bitcoin and sending a balloon into stratosphere? how are the two related.
they say they are doing "high-altitude balloon experiment" but doesn't say what the experiment is about or how is it related to bitcoin.

a person is wanting free bitcoins so that they can get rich and only need to buy a $200 balloon to satisfy the project.
we have seen many people doing money grabs suggesting it will require high amount of donations. whilst the actual costs of the projects proposed requirements is very small.

The level of interest in space travel among Bitcoiners is so high I thought I'd make you guys a mascot for future use:

It likes some kinds of business opening ceremony sending many colorful balloons into the skys at the same time! But the difference is that  Bitnation/Spacechain Space Agency only sends one balloon. But after I check out the provided link, actually they plan to launch satellites loaded with Bitcoin nodes into orbit, not the type of ballon we have seen every day.
OP is confusing us!!

balloons that are sent up in the stratosphere are usually used for weather studies and reports. why does a bitcoin related balloon is sent up there?

For blockchain storage and bigger decentralization, a way to have blockchain copies where it is hard for anyone to reach and destroy it, but still be connectable to the network... Making the blockchain more resilient :)

I think this is a great idea. This + Garzik's plans will go far in the long run

You guys didn't read the OP properly! Bitnation Space Agency is a decentralized organization and all (almost) our technology is open source, free for everyone to use. The objective is to cut down the costs of space travel and develop new technologies that will take us to Earth orbit and beyond. Most of a space mission is administrative costs – bureaucracy.

So they are making it cheaper to send a bitcoin node into orbit? How long does that payload stay in orbit? I am no space buff, but it sounds doable if that is the goal. There are so many space junk up there, I think it must be a nightmare for NASA or any other organization to launch or navigate through all that.

While the idea might be noble I don't think this is the best way. Some things can't be decentralized by nature, and I would like to have some agency like Global Bureau of Space Operations than many defragmented initiatives. For now I think this is publicity stunt and nothing real will ever born from this project. I wish I am wrong tho.
