Title: [0.1BTC/domain] Register/host .bit domains with bitcoins
Post by: khal on May 31, 2011, 10:56:18 AM
.bit is a decentralized and anonymous top level domain name [read more] (http://dot-bit.org/Main_Page).

Here is the first website to register .bit domains, directly with bitcoins, without configuration :
http://register.dot-bit.org/

It allows you to :
- register a .bit domain (or not, you can only take the hosting or the redirect)
- redirect it to an url :
=> yourdomain.bit will be redirected to youdomain.otherTLD
- use a web hosting :
=> you will browse directly on yourdomain.bit

Prices :
- new domain : 0.1 BTC, renewal included for 1 year
- redirect : included with a new domain (0.1BTC otherwise)
- web hosting : from 0.1 to 0.5BTC/month

It's still in beta, but functional, so, report me any problem.

TODO :
- allow to transfer domain
- put some text/details

Any comments ?

So...  domain names that are totally invisible to the rest of the internet?  And you need to renew them every 12 weeks?

What's not to love?

I still fail to see what good comes out of this. but I must say I have not dug (possibly) deep enough.

People are using them :
- for the fun to use a new tld, to pay something with bitcoins, etc
- for their decentralized feature

There is a bounty of 3500BTC for that, so, there must be some interest :p

First domain ready : http://scroll.bit

Edit : second one - http://wally.bit

I'm pretty sure it'll take more than $30,000 to get ICANN approval as a new TLD.

I'm pretty sure it'll take more than $30,000 to get ICANN approval as a new TLD.
That is not the aim of the project, and it would be like installing the wolf in sheep's... We would give the power to cut/seize a domain to ICANN, which we just want to avoid :p.
Of course, it'll remain few used for a long time, and we are aware of it. But, the possibility will exist, and that's all that is important. Will we reach a critical mass ? Nobody can say it...

The benefit of .bit is simple:

You own your .bit domain names.

That cannot be said of any other TLD, not even of the other alternative DNSs such as OpenNIC.

The closest thing to ownership you can achieve with those is a long term lease but you will always be at the whim of the true owners.

You have full control over your .bit domain names, the same way you have full control over your Bitcoins.  What gives someone control over a .bit domain is a private key and nothing else.

Now, simple question: how can people possibly visit a .bit website?

Now, simple question: how can people possibly visit a .bit website?

Easy for you, just use one of the DNS servers that support it.

The problem is getting other people to use them.

Currently, you have two solutions to browse .bit domains (http://dot-bit.org/HowToBrowseBitDomains) :
- use an existing DNS server that support .bit (or create your own, scripts will be available in some weeks)
- use a proxy (a local one is better, of course) (not enough documented yet)

Fixed a upper/lower case bug : names are converted to IDNA and then lowercase (thanks gsan for the bug report :p).
Added some questions/answers on homepage. More info later on hosting.

It will redirect for everybody who has configured a DNS server which support .bit domains. Maybe you tried to display it before it was configured and you have some cache ?

Donation for the project are here :
https://dot-bit.org/Dot-BIT_Project:Site_support
I've received the first one today : 1.23BTC. Thanks to the anonymous person :)
They will be used for various things, not all decided yet, but with one aim : reward people invested in this project.

http://register.dot-bit.org is my own website, which provide additional services : no need to exchange NMC/BTC, no configuration and even no namecoind needed, which requires some of my time :p. So, the payments are for me. 10BTC for now, with 5 today !

ps : i've reserved less than 10 domains, i'm not a domain reseller, but a direct domain seller :p

You're welcome.  I wish to encourage the rapid growth and deployment of Namecoin in every way possible.  Because Bitcoin:Paypal::Namecoin:Godaddy.  We need both, or neither has a future.

It's lame that nobody else has donated yet.  Come on people, pony up and help us get Namecoin and dot-bit off the ground ASAP.

Especially all you early adopter bitcoin billionaires.  Spread the wealth, yo!

That's a feature I'd love to see!

I'd expect some bells & whistles down the road to justify the 1btc hosting fee.  That's like $18/year, which gets you a lot at namecheap or 1and1.

Of course that's not a fair comparison at the present time, but that's the benchmark for domain registration services.

Another good way to develop the namecoin space is to have a SEDO.com like market for .bit domains.  How high of a bounty would need to be put up to make this happen?

Title: Re: [announce] Register .bit domains with bitcoins (+ hosting)
Post by: khal on June 13, 2011, 10:52:22 PM
Current administration panel does not allow me to limit to redirect, so it's not available by default. But this is an intersting idea.

I would allow to :
- manage root domain and subdomains
- choose an url redirection for each
- "associate" with an ip address to host data elsewhere (this option is currently not available for you).

If you convert it dollar, yes, currently, this seems very expensive... and due to the recent huge difficulty increase, this is even worse. Bitcoin / Namecoin difficulty ratio is now 37 and market price ratio is 1BTC/30NC...

=> I've increased price to 2BTC per domain (don't convert it to $ or you will cry :p). And don't expect difficulty ratio to go in the other way.... Bitcoins are overpriced !

zavanky> if you want it (admin panel) you can be the first one to have it :p. Send me a mail once you registered your domain name, i will create you a real account.

ps : renewal price will be much lower that registration price. It's just we don't know what block fees will be in 1 year (even if there is huge probability that they'll be very low, like bitcoin fees). I don't want to take any risk.

It's already secured in that way :
- all passwords are hashed with random salts.
- private data are reduced to the minimum (from an email to nothing)
- web hosting accounts are isolated (unix & mysql rights)

ps : i don't have 400k of BTC to be stolen.

However, can you shows some examples of those that have website content on them?

A lot of people don't wan't to pay for a second web hosting because they already have one. So they chose the redirect/external hosting function i provide on http://register.dot-bit.org (and can't or don't know how to configure a vhost on their current web hosting). So, almost all reserved .bit domains are configured to redirect to another domain, or they are available for sell.

Example of .bit with "direct content" i know :
http://forum.bitcoin.bit
http://dot-bit.bit
http://hosting.bit / http://register.bit
http://ns.bit
http://dns.bit / http://opennic.bit/

Non related namecoin (i test some domains starting with a, b or c letter and excluded "It works pages" :p) :
http://2fast2bcn.bit
http://apps.bit
http://blacksun.bit
http://china.bit
http://coupons.bit
http://craigslist.bit

Quote
PS. I believe the easiest way to visit .bit domain is to go to namecoin.us and enter the domain there.
If the owner hasn't added the virtualhost blacksun.namecoin.us, it will not work. So, you may use the "full proxy" by adding .bit :

There are several solutions to browse .bit domains : http://dot-bit.org/HowToBrowseBitDomains

For this to really work, we need a "one-click" option to add the DNS to it. On top of that, we need some API in order to bundle this with other software in order to really spread it. What would be nice is if this starts to get used big time, then we have decentralized money and domains. Now that is ownership anyone here can understand  ;)

I think khal is currently away, and I don't know whether or not his service is currently still working.  Note however that you can register .bit domains yourself for about 0.02 NMC, which is much, much cheaper.  Take a look here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=236375.0  (Or use the command-line if you prefer, it works well for me.  See https://dot-bit.org/ for more details on how to do it.)

By "host", do you mean how to configure the IP address they should resolve to?  This is described in the Wiki on https://dot-bit.org/ and can be done (I think) also with the Qt interface.  Apart from that I can't see what else you could mean by "host" ... for just holding the domain name, you don't have to do anything after registering (including the "firstupdate" part of course!), and renewing in time after at most 36.000 blocks.

Well by hosting i mean:
I have a domain. But the domain needs a page to be displayed. And the needed files like index.htm and so on need to be somewhere. I would update the dns string for the adress so it gets directed to the files. Or am i completely wrong? I don't
Want to redirect it to a normal .com adress or so.

Ah sorry, then I misunderstood you.  I acknowledge that if you also need webspace and don't already have a server somewhere (which you can rent also anonymously with Bitcoin, if you like, which will probably be more expensive but also give you more features if you can make use of them) then you can't do "namecoin alone" and indeed khal's service provides for you.  What you can do yourself is let your .bit domain redirect you to the IP of your server.

But still no reaction. Also wrote a mail , pm and here. Nothing...
So at least give me my money back. I will give you another 2 days until sunday. Else i have to give negative trust...

Thanks for letting others know not to send money to an unmaintained site. Many of the links on dot-bit.org have died without being updated or removed, the site also maintained by khal.

It's better to register .bit yourself with your own namecoins. You only need to remember to frequently do the name_update, there's no reminder that your name will expire after six months or less. If you want someone else to have ultimate control of your domain names, you don't really need a dot bit for that.
