Title: Blockchain.info giving me "Chain Head Not Found" Message?
Post by: snarlpill on June 06, 2015, 05:28:06 PM
Hey everybody,
I keep a small amount of BTC in a blockchain.info wallet and have never had any problems; I think their service is pretty safely protected but that's a side note. But anyways when I logged into my wallet a minute ago on my phone and just now on the computer it's giving me a red "chain head not found" message. I'm not worried or concerned or anything, but does anybody know what that means? It made me think of all the talk I've heard lately about Bitcoin XT and block size, and a possible fork in the future to a new blockchain. Could any of this have any relation? I'm guessing the "chain head not found" statement is referring to checking the blockchain for newest blocks & transactions. The computer loaded my wallet but still gave me that message. I had just never seen it before so was curious about what caused it and figured I'd ask you more knowledgeable Bitcoin users.

Thanks in advance for any info. and answers

We are working to resolve a database issue. We anticipate there could be up to several hours of downtime while we investigate. Stay tuned.

There is a thread in the services section where people have been discussing it. Some people cannot access the site at all, but I found it loaded for me with a "Not Connected (0 Nodes Connected) " message at the bottom of a blank page.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=175173.60

It's been showing "Not Connected (0 Nodes Connected)" to me for over an hour now.

I'm getting the same issues.  ::)

Pretty sure everyone is getting it but they have updated their twitter, checked it out from a few posts above. Didn't like look of the red when you have more than you should on a online wallet  :D Once we are up and running I will be getting it out of dodge and on paper.

Thanks for the responses guys, I checked out their Twitter it looks like nothing to be worried about, in my opinion. I keep any extra amounts of BTC I have on securely generated paper wallets but I import into blockchain.info whenever I need to spend, and I've kept some amounts on blockchain.info's systems for almost 2 years now, no problems. I trust their security, just hang tight guys (and use paper wallets when possible) I'm sure they'll get it back up soon. Plus they're US based so they wont be able to pull a "Mark Karpeles" so easily and get away with it.  :D
Maybe they had to restart their Bitcoin client or something.

I also have some Bitcoins on blockchain wallet address but I am sure they are working to solve the data issue and sooner all will be up and working again like before.I am not worried those who are new and are worried about their balances for them my advice is to have patience.Your Bitcoins are safe and sound.

If it has been hacked then they'll loose all the customers I think (and I hope)...

Don't worry, it want be hacked anytime soon. It's an out of sync client, which is possibly causing them to have incorrect (lower) wallet balances.

We Will Be Back Shortly

Blockchain.info is currently down for maintenance.

They are probably re-syncing as NyeFe says. That can take quite some time with the best hardware available.

Is it for everyone ? There is no update on their twitter as of yet!

Now the site is showing it is under maintenance. They are working on it. In the meantime, try https://www.blocktrail.com/.

@HelpMySituation-
You need to try and relax a little bit man...  Lol I hope most of your posts in this thread weren't actually serious.

I'm getting the maintenance message when I try as well. They've updated their Twitter with this:

"We're activating maintenance mode again to investigate a database issue. All funds and wallets are secure."

As I said earlier in this thread, I trust their security. They've had many BTC experts work for them and look at their systems including Andreas Ant. & others. I'm sure they will have it back up ASAP.

If you look at previous things, you won't trust Blockchain.info's security but people's* trustworthiness.

P.S. * I mean people behind Blockchain.info.

What do you mean by that?

EDIT: And by me saying I trust them, that is just my personal opinion, I'm not telling everybody to trust them. I am not BTC rich anyways and always keep bigger amounts on paper wallets to save, but I have held BTC with them for a little while now, no problems.

Blockchain.info has pushed buggy codes earlier and there was also a few security problems but they compensated all people who lost money due to it.

Example: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=581411.0 - If the Bitcoins went to a wrong hand, I don't think these money would be returned.

BC.info appears to be down again. API is not working neither is their websocket :/ Very bad PR for blockchain.info lately.

I checked out your link and it seems everybody that lost Bitcoins had used CounterParty's CounterWallet and their private keys were exposed due to a bug in their code. I saw someone that had a blockchain.info wallet lost like 12 BTC, but they said they had used CounterWallet from CounterParty and their private key had been stolen through a bug in that wallet. So it doesn't seem to be blockchain's fault in that case, but I admit I definitely did not read that whole thread. I believe you could find more examples though, but I haven't personally had any bad experiences with blockchain.info.

Edit- I did see a link to Reddit in that thread where bc.info admitted they had pushed a buggy update that did not fully generate private keys securely. They did say they tried to reach out to users who were affected and that it was less than 0.0002% of their user base. Nevertheless a bad mistake though, I agree.

While I do have faith in the trustworthiness of blockchain.info -- they paid me back BTC I had transferred out from my wallet there (but they do not hold my private keys, so, ahh, ahh...), I have noticed that they DO have problems on a pretty regular basis.

"Buggy"

What this tells me is how important it is to have the bulk of your BTC in cold storage.

My latest purchase using BTC was directly from my Trezor.

I definitely agree with you on holding the bulk in cold storage. You should never have all of your wealth or spending money in a service dependent on outside factors (down time, maintenance, hacks, etc.). Trezors or similar or just securely generated paper wallets or multi-sig, Bip-38, etc.

Yeah I read more of the thread and edited my above post afterwards, that was my bad. I should have read more of the thread originally before commenting, I just didn't have the time, I have to get off here soon. I agree that pushing a buggy update that led to weak private keys being compromised is a pretty bad & negligent flaw. Kudos to the "Good Samaritan" in that thread returning some of the BTC to bc.info and to blockchain for trying to return it to users.
