Title: Automated spammy posts [update] 6/9/2015 referral promotion spam; locked topics
Post by: alani123 on June 08, 2015, 03:34:35 AM
Certain accounts are currently dominating the front page of the forum with their replies. Posts are coming from the Chinese board.

Here are a few examples:

Wow. Quite weird to see sr. Members making such posts. Google translate shows that the posts were spamy(and were likely automated). For a quick action you can PM the moderator of the Chinese section with a few details.

I'm seeing this all the time, I also reported this user https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=322370 to coinomat.com but he doesn't seem to care, he didn't even reply my PM , and this guy keeps spamming..
It's weird that the forum doesn't ban these users nor the signature campaign removing them from the campaign..

but they spam to increase activity, or to get higher balance with signature campaign?!? or any other "freak" reason?!?

All handled, not going to delete the posts though, too tedious and time consuming.

It's weird that the forum doesn't ban these users nor the signature campaign removing them from the campaign..

It's a bit harder when it comes to foreign languages.

I noticed those too, I was in the Chinese section doing research for Unobtanium. I just assumed the moderator of that board was no longer active. As BadBear said, foreign language boards are more difficult. It's nice to have Mitchell in the Dutch section, for example.

You could always nuke the account. I know it's been done this in the past for similar reasons. We wouldn't want those guys to be paid for cluttering foreign boards would we?

Nuke only works on newbies, and even then it times out eventually, around 70 posts, though you can just hit nuke again.

Even if I go through and rapidly delete all the replies on a page (middle click delete button will open it in a new tab and delete the post, so the page you're on doesn't need to refresh), it will still take like...20 seconds to complete while SMF wanders off, sits under a tree, and contemplates life. And I can't do anything else in the meantime.

When we say SMF sucks, we mean it. Too many things can't be done through the web interface or are too inefficient.

Oh wow, I wasn't aware of the shittiness. But whatever your plan was to stop the spam, it seems to have worked. The front page seems clean from spam now.

Coinomat said there will be updates this week. Give them time.

They must be verifying people's posts because they are late with the payments

I have reported this user 10 days ago, one of the forums staff also reported to coinomat.com but he didn't get a reply as well..

The Chinese board has gone through many moderator changes. It certainly houses a lot of spam. Maybe theymos could hire people that use the board and actively report bad topics and replies there so they can clean it up on a more regular basis. But such spam is also motivated by signature campaigns, people are making loads of nonsensical posts in the Chinese board to get their sig payment with zero effort. Perhaps coinomat could also contribute by not paying posts in the Chinese boards.

The spam posts are in fact in the off-topic board of the Chinese board, but most signature campaigns supporting local boards also pay for those posts. I personally think that the rules of the signature campaigns is the basic problem. To solve it signature campaigns should deny payment to those post in off-topic boards in all languages.

Surely problem is caused by the signature campaign's loose rules. But such low effort posts shouldn't be welcome in any board. The fact that the Chinese board is one of the few ones that such spam can take place in means that the board also has faulty moderation.

this might be a little off-topic, but it looks like there's only 1 mod overseeing the Chinese board. which I think is a bit low for such a big board.

It's not off topic, I made two posts about this above. The other mod that used to frequent there probably went awol. A single mod is most certainly not enough for what's probably the biggest non-English board here.

There's a new guy now who keeps posting in the economy and marketplace subs (such as goods, services, auctions etc) with the same post which is just his ref link to a cloud mining site. He's locked all the threads so I couldn't write anything in it and call him out.

Right, this user has probably posted in every single board of the forum, I'll let his name out. Maybe some public shaming will teach this guy a lesson.

Username: hunkey600

Profile: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=409703

His spamming is so vicious! He probably created a script to post the same spammy message on each board and the posts get instantly locked. Maybe BadBead shouldn't have mentioned that nuking accounts is hard. Clearly this guy is posting those messages in hope that they stay up as long as possible before he gets permabanned.

Edit: AT101ET reported this slightly earlier than me.

Haha. I just got it in slightly before you. Every sub I've clicked on I've been greeted by his lousy locked 'free 0.5 BTC' annoying threads.
I don't think public shaming is enough. He's not a noob, but rather a full member. Surely he should be familiar with the forum rules by now...

I don't think this is actually referral spam. I think it is just a scam website and the person behind the scam website is spamming the forum with what he wants to look like referral spam. Either way it looks like grue was able to handle this one and according to his trust rating he deleted 54 spam posts

Another user seems to be posting nonsensical posts in the Chinese section. The off topic board seems to be riddled with spammy posts.

That account has been reported as hacked: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1085850.new;topicseen#new

And it has been banned for the ref. spam:
Don't bother recovering the account, it was banned today for spamming ref links (54 posts in total).

EDIT: I did report and will leave it to mods.

Possible. I didn't check the changelog to see if he reset his pass since the forum was compromised. But you are correct,we are starting to see a few accounts exhibit strange behavior.
