rowan ash is moutain ash. its the same thing different name.


i never knew the fruit was edible unitl i just searched for it. apparently it is not pousinos but does not taste very nice. for best test let it over ripen.

Now who would have thought that bitcoin would led me to researching Mountain Ash   ???

The mead, wine and beer sound very interesting.

I can pop some in the mail for you though I expect Malaysian customs will intercept them unless you have an import certificate.

I don't think mine are ripe enough yet, but that is your call. 

I think I read that they would be ready when the berries/seed start to drop off the tree ... probably another month, depending upon the weather.

Any botany experts around to comment?

the berry doesnt need to be ripe for viable seeds.

rambutan looks like a kind of lychee but with extra hairy shell
and i have not tried anything like durian although it looks similar to roasting chestnuts.

yes the best way to get seeds out of the fruit is to open the fruit scrape the inside out throw away the skin. take a piece of kitchen roll or toilet roll. place the fruit that you scooped from the skin into the kithen/toilet roll. squash the juice out of it and keeping squeeing the juice and drying it with roll.

then you should be able to open the roll and have the seeds with most of the fruit and juice taken away. then wrap what is left in a bit more roll and leave in a dry warm place. when the roll of seeds is dry then you can post. the seeds can be planted straight from the roll. the loo roll is a good starting grow medium for germination of seeds.

it is a good time to take cuttings if you can find a birch tree. you will need to create a mini green house with a used pop bottle. but you should be able to get a root from a soft wood cutting of a tree if you can find one. there are how to's on taking cuttings on youtube. for some trees it is easier to take a cutting than it is to germinate a seed.

I know my fair share about taking cutting.. But not of birch tree's  :-X


I have found tons of Birch tree seeds around my local area but none are viable... I cant get any to germinate.

they probably are viable but it can be difficult to germinate some tree seeds. did you try freezing the seeds over winter?

No, I have not.. I am very impatient. I will try the cloning a branch technique on a few young branches..


Any idea when the best time of year is to take a "Cutting" ?

late summer /ealry autumn is a good time. you need to get soft green growth. branch that has gone woody will be very difficult to root. late summer early autumn that new wood has had a good growth spurt. take cuttings early in the morning when the tree has been filling up and restoring energy over night.

when you plant your cutting keep the soil dry. keep the propogator warm but not in direct bright sunlight good light near a window or shaded in a green house not direct sun. you want the plant to search for moisture in the ground. keep the leaves and air around the leaves moist. the plant will feed through its leaves and search for water through the soil. but you dont want it to find water in the soil. wet soil will cause damping off and your cutting will rot.

it will take a couple of months to root.

I will do it over winter and hopefully have a handful of cuttings rooted to plant in the spring... I will be searching tomorrow for some fresh green branches......
