Title: Beginners mining rig
Post by: redcodenl on May 31, 2011, 06:47:16 PM
Hi everybody,

I don't have a lot of experience building PC's, and I doubt I'll ever get ROI on my first mining rig heh. But I just like the idea of building one!

This is my current plan, any advice? Will it work? Can it be done (a lot) cheaper?

- Rasurbo BC-10 mini tower
- ASRock M3A770DE
- AMD Sempron 140
- 2x XFX HD5870
- OCZ StealthXStream 2 600W (Is this enough? Or would you suggest going 750W+?)
- 1 GB mem and a small HDD

This will set me back 550 euro, if I build it myself (is this hard?). I've already replaced some videocards, HDD's, DVD players etc in my life, just never build a PC from scratch.

Roy

I'd suggest going with a 750w PSU and grabbing two 5830s, which will be more cost-effective.

How are two 5830's more cost effective than two 5870s?

Just looked it up, getting myself two 5870 in this setup will costs me 550 euro, and getting 2x 5830 will cost me 417 euro.

Which is actually a good point, as I'm not likely to ever see a ROI :-) Why spend that extra 133 euro?

Or maybe I should put 3x 5830 in the machine? And obviously upgrade the power supply!

Just a feeling I have... No particular reason.

Any more advice on the choice of cards (5830/5870), the amount (2 seems easier to accomplish then 3), or building a PC from scratch?

3x 5830 would give you atleast 750 Mh/s in a worst case scenario. 300$ you can (theoretically) earn in roughly 20 days. Add in a difficulty increase and some power and you're looking at 1½ month for ROI at most.

Have fun :)

seems fine to me 3x 5830s might get you slightly more then 2x 5850s imo id go with the 5850s

Hmm, it seems that adding a third 5830 will force me into a lot more expensive motherboards... and more expensive PSU. I'd rather buy another case with two cards in the future if it turns out to be worth while.

So I guess I'm going for the cheapest option:

- Rasurbo BC-10 mini tower
- ASRock M3A770DE
- AMD Sempron 140
- 2x HD5830 Extreme
- OCZ ModXStream Pro 700W (should be enough for 2x 5830)
- 1 GB mem and a small HDD

(resulting in +/- 430 euro)

You need bigger case, mid tower or full tower.

PLEASE HELP....NEWBIE HERE!

Seeing  as this is the newbies thread :) i figured i'd ask a few questions. I just started reading up on Bitcoin mining and am VERY,VERY interested in mining with  my current rig, however, since i am new to this i do not know if my rig is sufficient enough. I anticipate having to purchase some new hardware but would like to be pointed in the right direction.

Current rig:

Dell XPS 420
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Quad Core Processor
3 GB PC2-5300 DDR2 Memory
1x ATi Radeon HD 2600 XT Graphics Card 256 Memory

Question:

Obviously im going to need better GPU's but as far as everything else is concerned, what else do i need to make a decent amount of BitCoins every month on this rig?

2x5870 is actually more cost-effective in that rig than 2x5830.

With 5830 you would get around 300MH/s tops per card, while 5870 gets you some 420-440, or 40ish % more, while the rig with 5870s would be only 32% more expensive. 5870s are also more efficient powerwise than 5830s.

Of course it will cost a bit more electricity, but those costs are negligible for now at least.

I'd say go for 5870s if you can find them that cheap, or 5850s.

For what its worth, my 5830 is doing 312MH/s and it doesn't seem to be maxed out yet even....
