Post by: nomadquandry on June 17, 2015, 11:23:29 AM
I recently had to format my laptop due to some serious virus issues, I did manage to backup my files and folders but now although I can find things relating to my nxt wallet I can't reinstate it and god knows where the bitcoins have gone to, help :(

Which bitcoin client did you use? Was it bitcoin-core, electrum, or other wallets? For bitcoin-core, you have to find the "wallet.dat" file usually in "C:\Users\<YourName>\Appdata\Roaming\Bitcoin" folder.

You need to give more information for others to help you.

Edit: @OP: Are you confused with terms NXT and Bitcoin? Both of them are different currencies. Please specify which coin you are referring to.

wich OS do you use?
if you have windows, and you use QT-Wallet do you back up %AppData% folder?
Another way to recover your btc it is to import your private key... if you have backupped it before formatting pc..
if no, your btc are gone...
I hope you will be able to recover your btcs...

Is this an nxt wallet or bitcoin?

As others have said:  what OS, what software etc?  :-)

I am using windows 7 64bit, the bitcoins were in a nxt wallet and now everything seems to be saved as either a Text Document or as a Chrome HTML Document

Bitcoin cannot be in an nxt wallet. Bitcoin and NXT are two different cryptocurrencies.

I think that is your answer. You have an alt-coin, not BTC.

If you had NXT coins then all you need to get them back is the password to your NXT wallet. You can either use a web based NXT wallet or install your own. You type in the password, hit the enter key, and your coins should show up in your wallet.

If you have NXT, there is no local wallet file to lose. As long as you still have your password, your NXT are accessible from any NXT client.
Have you still got the NXT account number ? If so, check it out on a block explorer:

If you had BTC, well, they're gone unless you can find the wallet.dat file.
