I took the plunge. I bought 1 btc today from a coworker who has been telling me about Bitcoin since 2012.
Just wanted to say Hi, HI, and introduce myself.
Is there anything here I need to know, what a stupid question.. I need to know everything.

Is there a good place to go for a all about bitcoin lesson?

You can find another info about bitcoin in bitcoin wiki (https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki), like about transaction and ect.
Choose your wallet carefully, here: https://bitcoin.org/en/choose-your-wallet better to store your btc in desktop wallet, example: Electrum. If you want more secure you can buy hardware wallet or use paper wallet(cheap).

I don't think we have any sort of customer support, but if you ever have technical issues with your bitcoin core/electrum/other wallet. make a topic here (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=4.0). make sure you've googled around first before asking.

and avoid from using online exchange as your wallet, their site might get compromised at any time and you might lose your BTC in the process.

Thanks for the wonderful help guys. Right now I have the bitcoin on my work machine (it's safe, I have been working there for 22 years and have my own office) on a multibit wallet.
That is what my coworker uses and he told me it was the best. But he also told me to get it on my computer at home and then send the bitcoin from my work computer to me home computer so I was going to do that tonight. Download the wallet at home and then in the morning I was going to send my btc home.

Is this the right way to go?

No it's not safe there at all. If I were you I'd move it asap. If your friend or anyone else uses that computer they can send the bitcoin to where ever they want. (not saying that they will do this but just that they could if they wanted to)


Yes it is the right thing to do but do make sure that the computer at your home is Malware free, you need to read more on how to keep your bitcoins safe and cold storage but for now moving them to your home computer should be your first priority. These links will help you:

you can still mine those for cheap, no reason to ignore them altogether, they can still offer some profit, in mining(not trading or anything else)

you only need to play wisely, and search for the good ones that are launched every day/week

in the future other "dashcoin" may be launched, so always stay tuned for something that would give you plenty of money

as long as you download the right wallet file from the official website, follow the security options and never get malware/keyloger/etc you are safe.
but i suggest you consider cold-storage for better safety of your money.


altcoins have their own pros and cons. this is not a good advice to give someone to avoid them at all costs.

With bitcoin, you are the one who is ultimately responsible - there is no organisation that could get you out of trouble for example if you lose your wallet password or your funds get stolen due to insufficient computer security.

Of course, there are lots of helpful people here on the forum who can give you advice on many topics, but you need to decide which you consider expert advice and which is being posted to increase the post count for some signature ad campaign (this post, for example, fits both categories ;) )

There are also quite a number of scammers active on this forum. If an offer seems to good to be true, it most likely is a scam. Stay away from sites that promise to "magically" increase your bitcoin (most of them are ponzi schemes that pay out according to their promises for a while and then run with the funds, some are just lazy scams that just run with your money without even trying to keep the illusion).

Gambling is a way of losing money, as well - sometimes it can be fun, so if you're into that kind of fun and don't mind paying for it, go for it, but if you're in risk of getting addicted, stay away. "Binary options" and other shady "investment" schemes are thinly veiled gambling offers as well.

If you want to invest, gather all information on your prospective investment and decide whether the operation (and if applicable, the fund operator or broker) is trustworthy and able to yield a revenue, just as you would with traditional money. Still even with honest partners, investments can be lost due to incompetence or just bad luck.

Put your bitcoin offline in a cold storage, to a safe place. There are many bad people trying to steal bitcoin nowadays.

Also dont forget the password, thats the 2nd way to lose bitcoin easily.

your coworker didn't tell you what you "need to know"? more than anything -- keep your coins safe. if you don't control the private keys (i.e. you sent them to an address controlled by a 3rd party), you don't own the bitcoins.

Best advice I can give you is to start educate your self.
The most fundamental thing is the learn how to store bitcoins without loosing them.
If you do it right you can store money in much more safe way than any bank can ever offer you.
