Post by: deputuycat on June 23, 2015, 02:05:52 AM
My company is considering an alt coin dev, can I reserve the name of the coin?

If so whats the best way to approach this.

Thanks

You cant reserve the name, maybe your company wants to trade mark the name what would be something else, try the altcoin board for a altcoin dev and a more depth look at the altcoin development world.

^^^ That is to reserve the username in the forum.
After that, you should head over to the altcoin announcements section (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=159.0), and make a pre-announcement of your coin.
Update the thread every now and then and you should be good.

It's depends on your company which want to build an altcoin, for example i can make a coin and give a name ikyCoin, just simple :) but your skill for development a coin must be nice, most all but no all, new coin came to shitcoin because the development management.

it isn't true, you can reserve  name when you launch it
if you want to launch a coin 123coin , and make an account with that name
still if someone want to launch the coin before you can choose different name like 123coin_dev or like this to launch the coin
even a normal guy with any random username can launch a coin with that name

I suggest you ninja launch keep all name secret till you have a working coin on test-net and ready to launch. Registered trademarks are a good idea but are costly and time consuming, also they come with no guarantee that a thief won't come copy your name or take your idea. Look at Peercoin where the other DEV ran off and created Primecoin, or with us when we pre-ann here (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=556746.0) our name was jacked with a basic scrypt copy before we could even launch. Loose lips sink ships.

Get a good domain and start exercising your trademark rights. Then everything else can follow.

Your main concern will be securing a suitable (ticker) symbol.

I second the suggestion above to register a domain name as quickly as possible if it's not already taken. I've missed out on good domain names in the past (not cryptocurrency-related ones though) because I waited several days too long and yeah, it really sucks. Same thing happened to the guy who owns CoinLearn.org too:

Quote
CoinLearn:  1. For months, while I was developing the site including logo, I knew CoinLearn.com was free. It got booked the day before I tried to actually book it online. So, again I needed to decide which domain I needed to settle upon and change logo and texts accordingly.

If this happens to you then your only options are to either register a variant of the domain that you wanted (e.g. xcoin.net or getxcoin.com instead of xcoin.com) or to ask the owner to sell you the domain and potentially pay many times the cost of registration.

Just make the account with the coin name and voilà. You reserved your name.

Sunny King is the main dev for both Peercoin and Primecoin. Scott Nadal originally contributed to the development Peercoin but his involvement with the coin diminished later on. Peercoin has more active development these days and Sunny King is behind most of it so I'm not sure what you mean by saying that he ran off. ???

And even if you reserve the coin name somehow, it doesnt stop anybody from using the same name if you don't protect it legally..

Just look and the pandacoin shit, there were 3 around a year ago.. Crazy stuff.

Not too many altcoin names are protected legally to my knowledge. Maybe just a handful or more.

And then it depends on the country. Do you protect it in every country? Probably not, the Chinese will probably use it ;)

Well, we've seen something can be done legally. Look at the ConyeCoin thing. I remember they forced the developers to change the name, because Kanye West sent the lawyers and told them the name they were using was registered. They also forced them to change the logo of the coin. So things can be done.

With the help of an army of lawyers ;) I don't think op will be able to get another coin to back off, especially if he did not take action to protect the name..
