Title: (CLOSED) Free Money Day
Post by: Severian on September 15, 2012, 01:44:22 PM
EDIT: Free Money Day was yesterday but I'm always here to help a newbie out if I can. Let me know.

Today is Free Money Day (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/09/14/free-money-day-lehman-brothers_n_1884264.html). Yay! So I'm giving some away too.

To qualify, your account needs to be less than 4 hours old but more than a few minutes old. I'll peruse your history to attempt to ensure that you're not a sock puppet. You also need to demonstrate some form of rationality and non-trollishness, a difficult task for some it would appear.

You also need to learn how to import a private key into your wallet as I'll be sending you a link with a private key in it. I'll send the link when I've satisfied myself that you're for real.

Though not a condition, it would be in the spirit if you choose to pass a little onto someone else too. I won't be giving away a bunch, so please don't get your hopes up too high.

This is open-ended and could end at any moment.

While I'm a newbie my account is too old as I've been trying to learn as much about Bitcoin as I can.  I also don't know about the private key importing.  Still thank you for doing this!  I hope you get a lot of good responses, the faucets are great but limited and the more people who start using BTC the more valuable it will become.  Good luck!

Word of warning, getting coins using private keys is a 1 time thing, empty the wallet and don't re-use it. I doubt Severian would re-use his copy of the private keys to take any money that's put into those wallets but that's the danger. Nice one Severian, big thumbs up.

This is a good point and one I should have mentioned. Thanks for bringing it up.

As soon as you import the key and btc, send the btc to an address that you know is yours. You can delete my imported private key when you're done.

Educate yourself about PK importing and get back to me. I'm easy.  :)

This is an exercise in teaching newbies how to use bitcoin. Being an old fart, I'm pretty good at detecting fakers, though certainly not perfect.

Where were you a week ago!?!?!?! LOL...

At any rate, it's cool that you're doing this for newbies and at the very least I've learned about private keys and their associated danger, thanks!!!

Newbies: SERIOUSLY appreciate what is being done here for you. I've been here about a week and haven't made my first full bitcoin yet, it's NOT easy...

Hola :D

These past 2 months have been my only experience with BTC, and I've successfully passed through some coins. I've also used PGP keys, which is why I think I'll understand BTC private keys.
I've only used ewallets to do my one time storing and tumbling. Seems to work well. Any other suggestions for security?

How exactly do BTC private keys work, is it the same fundamentals as pgp public keying?

Anyways, Id love to take your offer on the free btc :D

Title: Thank You!
Post by: SRG on September 15, 2012, 07:09:11 PM
Thank you for the BTC!   :)

Thank you also for:
a. Using your gift to motivate me to further explore Bitcoin.
b. Pointing out blockchain.info which really made things simple.
c. Giving me a chance to make some legitimate posts to escape "newbie" land.
d. Educating me about Free Money Day.  Consistent with the premise of the holiday, I'll be sure to pass along at least half of what you sent me.  Probably as a donation to one of the faucets since that seems to be the first place all of us newbies go to get familiar with BTC!

Thank you for the BTC and for showing me an easy way to import the privkey, all that command line crap was driving me nuts and I couldn't get it to work...

Anyone else who gets BTC from this thread, I HIGHLY recommend just getting a wallet at blockchain.info importing the key there and then sending the BTC to your normal address from the blockchain wallet. It is MUCH easier than trying to import via command line...

Thank you again Sev!!!

Actually he didn't show me. I tried to learn the command line method myself from the BitCoin Wiki. Really all Sev did was suggest getting a wallet at blockchain.info and from there it was simple to figure out the rest on my own...
