I have $1,000,000,000 I don't need. But I need someone dead. You will NOT be caught. The person you kill
you will never know. They live on the other side of the planet. You will never know a thing about them.
Whether they were an upstanding citizen, child molester or serial rapist. You won't even know if they really
died.

But I'm going to give you a black remote control with a small red button.

When you press that button, that person will die, and you will get the $1,000,000,000 cash.

Will you press the button?

I'd be lying if I said I'm not tempted. but, hypothetically, if I was going to do that, I'm going to need a proof that you own that much money.  ::)

btw, is politics/society the right section for this?

I'd push the button, then donate 75% to a mix of Non Profits that help others out.

I'm in no way attacking you, to be clear; nothing at all wrong with such moral standpoints.  Just saying, heavy research is necessary when donating to such causes.

What if a certain person presses the button for that kind of money, and the person which is supposed to die is the guy who presses the button. Wouldn't that be an interesting turn. A test of God. A play of the devil.

Many people would do that with no question asked

It reminds me of the movie 13 sins, you get a call that asks you to do a simple thing, swat a fly, then presto you earned some money. Then the story evolves, the stakes rise and you cannot quit, they get entangled and it all ends up horribly wrong.

A number that big? Tempting, but what if it was a sibbling? I could not live with the thought I killed my own child. Too many unknown factors in this proposition. The only certainty is that it would not be me. And the ever nagging guilt, the burdon you will have to carry the rest of your life. Money and possesions are not what matters in life, life itself is what matters, that's why it is called 'life' and not 'money'. You ask eachother, 'how's life?' Not 'How's money?'

So no, I would not for a billion dollars press that button. But I am affraid that is the rational me talking, and a lot of people would not even blink twice before pressing it.

1 billion USD will save thousands of lives, in third world countries such as Moldova and North Korea. So I'll take the money, kill the target, and use the money to buy food for the starving people around the world.

Yes, I'll press the button and bring the money. I'll invest part of them for myself, I'll send 20% to his family and with the other part I'll donate to help research against cancer and other illnesses.

Its a brilliant scenario. A man with greed seeking luxury over another man's life. Such decisions tell a lot about a person. WE have been conditioned to believe that its alright to know that someone is dead and death eventually happens, regardless of our involvement in the incident or not.

Its funny how you guys think ending a life and getting a billion dollars is a wise thing to do. Regardless of how many lives you change with that money, it doesn't matter because you just sacrificed a life for that. A life is precious and you are nobody to decide who lives or dies. That itself, is a sin.

Well the thing is the person that dies is someone you don't know and never will meet and never will know who it was. So there is no chance of you or your family being affected.

Oh but you will... If you have a conscience that is... Ever wonder why a young looking president turns old with grey hair and bad looking skin in less than 5 years in power? He has to push that damn button multiple times a day...

That is true and I understand your point but in this situiation your not pushing this button and killing thousands. Your doing it once and your not even sure if someone dies, when I said that I meant directly affecting your family like your sibling or parents dieing due to the button.

Honestly I will press the button for sure and take the money if the button forward to me.
Because economy condition, I will do anything for money

Is that even a moral dilemma? I find it appalling that some would consider any option, but one: destroy that box.

Firstly lets imagine you actually have that amount of money to begin with, at this point in my life there is 0% chance that I would press the button for no amount of money. There would have been a time maybe 4 years ago, I would have had to fight myself not to press the button lol But now I would never do it. I have a family and I love life enough to never end someone elses, "unless" they hurt my little unit seriously then I'll kill them all in ways they never dreamed possible.

I would probably shove the box and the cash up the proposer's nose instead.

It really depends. Many people are pressing that button multiple times a day to earn some billion dollars. It is very difficult to tell if you should kill people when political and religion are mixed in the decision making

I read somewhere that one life worth 10 million dollars (Based on life threatening job's pay out, some people are willing to die for 10 million dollars). So 1 billion dollar is a sweet deal, you can contact that guy, make a contract to send half of that money to his relatives after you press the button,  and they will become new wealthy family, and you keep the rest :D

I really don't see how the choice you make here would be a big deal. People will happily do anything to get what they want provided they're able to conjure up strong enough reasons to silence their conscience.
The real question is would you squash a healthy living ant with your thumb for $1,000,000,000.

You could have put kill more than 1 though, 1 person is nothing, to make this chose harder you should have said push the button and kill 10,000. I have to say i would still be very tempted to push it, I'm only being honest.

Haha to some of the posts.  This idea is very similar to the plot in the movie "The Box".  I would personally not do it unless I could be assured the person deserved to die (war lord, mass rapist, etc).  I just couldn't live with myself honestly.

I am curious to know, why every time the mysterious button always in Red color, even criminals use RED buttons to do any evil stuff, I agree that police authorities wants to caution the people as marking as RED while there is any danger. But Why Criminals also marking RED, to whom they want to caution about such stuff?

If you tell someone that having a big problem and really need money to do that, I think it won't be a problem for him to push the button, especially if he is a villain that never care about other people life. I can't do that, just imagine if one of your family become the victim of the button.

yeah, this was exactly my first impression, after reading OP..people killing other people directly in person for few dollars, starving..and at least half of the world will push "the button" for 1k USD, maybe even less with zero fucks given feeling..

It's very obvious that if you use Game Theory(a branch of math that studies games) the right decision is to press the button and end one life and then use part of the money to let's say, create an hospital and save many more lives.

Opinions will matter according to which part of the world they are coming from

In India someone killed his brother for Rs10, that is 15 cents. In that part of the world people would kill even 10,000 for the opportunity to press such a button
