Title: Is there a 100% anonymous way to make BTC payments?
Post by: Come-from-Beyond on September 15, 2012, 09:07:34 PM
It's impossible to hide IP address when I send bitcoins. I could do it with a proxy, but I'm not sure that the proxy doesn't keep records about me. So any payment can be traced to the origin. And an Internet provider knows physical address of the person whom IP belongs to. Even TOR can be hacked to reveal my identity.

Is there a 100% anonymous way to make BTC payments?

Use a free public wifi on a prepaid wireless device, though I doubt TOR can be hacked if used properly.

You just need to make sure that you obtained the Bitcoins anonymously, and that your internet connection is anonymous.

In my country I have to show my passport to get a password for public wifi in a cafe.
TOR can be hacked - http://prisms.cs.umass.edu/brian/pubs/wright-tissec.pdf (page #13).

Every internet connection is non-anonymous for the Internet provider.

I wish Bitcoin had anonymity as a built-in feature...

just use an online wallet like blockchain.info, then use it to send payments, the IP address would be blockchain.info's address

When the research paper was done how to hack onion routing, that was in 2000 when there were far fewer such nodes in existence. For someone to successfully hack Tor now would mean they would have to have sniffers on a substantial part of the internet infrastructure because there are tens of thousands of computers running Tor nodes all over the world now. What is feasible and what is practical is miles apart in this case. We need more Tor users, spread that word instead!

Speaking on this, BlockChain also has an optional "mixer" you can send/receive Bitcoins with for an extra 1.5% fee.

You don't need to have complete anonymity because you have plausible denyability. If you are running a full node Bitcoin client your IP could be shows as the origin of any transaction and your transactions could be shown as originating with any other peer in the Bitcoin p2p network.
