I don't like them much except for scavenging their cooler to put on 5850 ;) Title: Re: the best...Cheapest gpu to buy Post by: Maxxx on June 01, 2011, 07:45:31 AM I've gotten a few new 5830's around here for $100 on sale.. good for ~300Mh/s Do you mean you got them at local brick and mortar stores? Title: Re: the best...Cheapest gpu to buy Post by: Digigami on June 01, 2011, 04:33:37 PM Yes, that's correct, local hardware store... Currently 5830's are $130, 5850's are $210. (CAD)
Usually for one weekend a month they have them on sale for $100 and $190 respectivly. Title: Re: the best...Cheapest gpu to buy Post by: mattpker on June 01, 2011, 04:41:11 PM A great price per performance are the 6950's that can be unlocked to 6970's.
The following card can be unlocked: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127555&cm_re=6950-_-14-127-555-_-Product You can unlock it by following these directions: http://www.techpowerup.com/articles/overclocking/vidcard/159 These can do over 400Mhash/s per card for under $250 after the mail in rebate. Title: Re: the best...Cheapest gpu to buy Post by: humble on June 01, 2011, 05:03:35 PM It's worth watching Craigslist for these. I've built a small cluster from second-hand (one owner) XFX 5870s. At least for the XFX brand the second owner also assumes the lifetime warranty. Considerable savings.

I like what your proposing. I've been looking into it now for a couple hours. It really does seem to make sense. Put my shopping list together.... |
