Title: Increasing Mining
Post by: IgpayAtinLay on September 17, 2012, 06:29:02 PM
Right now i am in a no fee pool (thank God for them), making barely anything still. I'm only pushing 5.2 Mhash/s. Is there anyway to increase this rate besides buying a 'rig'. Perhaps something less costly or settings i can change on my computer ???

Buy some shares on GLBSE, man. No hardware, no effort, for 5 bucks you will get about 5 MH/s.

Buy a good GPU, 7970 or 6990 would do great.
For more cost efficient mining, buy FPGA or ASIC.

Here is a link. to show you most mining hardware.

I have a ASUS CPU running WINDOWS 7

GPU is a Graphics Processor Unit, a Graphics Card.
CPU is your main processor, like a Intel I5.

You mentioned an asus, chances are your on a laptop. The laptops use onboard graphics cards....cant do much mining on them.

go to your device manager, then display adapters and get the model from there.

And a side note try to keep any personally identifiable information from your screenshots if you wish to remain anon.

thanks for the concern. i dont think that provided anything TOOO personal, right? but yeah, those are the specs. SO why am i only producing 5.5 Mhash/s?

Download and run GPU-Z from here: http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/
Then post a screenshot of that program.

Go to the device manager and then display adapter to get the model number, your video card is under there and the higher end ones tend to usually get from 100-200 mh. You are probably using your cpu.

Hello IgpayAtinLay  and welcome to the bitcoin forum

First thing, mining is not a get rich quick scheme. Second thing, knowing your hardware is a good thing if you want to mine.
Quote
ASUS CPU running WINDOWS 7
Means nothing.

The screenshot you provided tell us that your computer has a Intel i5 760 2.80ghz CPU and 8GB of RAM.

Now, using your processor to mine is useless. It's too too too slow. No one mine with the processor for that reason. Your 5.5mhash/s looks like from CPU mining.

People use graphic cards to mine. Yes, the one required to play videogames. Yes, it's much much more powerful than the processor, but only for some things (aka, games and few things like mining)

My ATI 6950 for example does 300mhash/s.

Use GPU-Z and tell us your videocard.

On a side note, why the hell did you buy a computer without even knowing what it is? :D

i did post a screen shot of that. how do i switch from cpu mining to video card mining?

Enable opencl and download a decent miner like cgminer https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=28402.0

You have a 5450. From this page https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mining_hardware_comparison i see it should make like 14mhash/s Not a lot. It's a very weak graphic card.

Anyway, you choose that from the miner. What are you using?

On a side note, why do you get a computer with an i5 intel and 8gb of ram but such a bad bad bad graphic card? I suppose you are not a gamer. But well, a 5450 is totally unsuited for mining.

No need to pay us for these suggestions! And well, as i said with your computer you can't mine a lot.

and the trading them for btc at btc-e.com

But still it's highly appreciated and as i plan on investing a lot of USD into bitcoins... yes you all will be payed back. in fact, im gonna try the suggestions you guys have given now, and if they increase my speed, i'll lock this thread and watch it so when i am able to pay you guys back, i can get you BTC address. I'm very serious. Why wouldnt you guys deserve a little BTC. I only have .0001642BTC but when i upgrade and get a rig within the next 2 months, you all will get payed. for now, im mining with my measly graphics card for measly .000000012 BTC a day haha
SOON.

Last questions:
1. Could i upgrade my graphics driver for free?
2. In specific details, how do i switch from CPU mining to GPU mining and enable openCL?
3. Can i use guiminer to do this?

haha it's gonna be a rough road. but i dont have class tomorrow so i will most likely just smoke a little herb and work on increasing my capabilities...
Is there anyway to upgrade your graphics card for free?

Not by much. You can optimize it with certain parameters depending on what miner you are using.

My suggestion would be to save on the herb and put that money toward an okay graphics card or an entry level FPGA device.

im fully self sufficient on the weed. my mining isnt the only thing adding to the power bill, savvy? But yea, how much is that 8950?

Title: Re: Increasing Mining
Post by: jojo69 on September 18, 2012, 02:11:12 AM
its a 6950

I have seen them going for under 200 now that the 7000 series are out, try craigslist or the marketplace forum here

Title: Re: Increasing Mining

how much would they increase my hash/s?

Title: Re: Increasing Mining
Post by: jojo69 on September 18, 2012, 02:32:51 AM
I am running 3 of them and it is right at 1 Gh/s actual performance in the pool

so about 330-340 Mh/s per card.

How many PCIe slots in your motherboard?  How many Watts in your PSU?

Title: Re: Increasing Mining
Post by: IgpayAtinLay on September 18, 2012, 03:04:53 AM
idk how to check PCIe, could you explain?
750 watts

Title: Re: Increasing Mining
Post by: jojo69 on September 18, 2012, 03:53:35 AM
Wow, OK...

The expansion slots on your motherboard, those deals where you can plug in a sound card, or network card or whatever...back in the day they used to be PCI (actually before that was the ISA bus but I digress) PCIe stands for "Peripheral Component Interconnect Express" and actually what you are checking for are more specifically PCIe x16 slots that will support video cards.

They look like this
https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTk0CPk4g64Vgugfz4Jrh_A-QVw2MNMisA3Di6FE0MAlsRWHeWVow

but the plastic part doesn't have to be black, it can be any color.

While you have the cover off also measure how much room you have between the slots in the back of the case where the cards screw in and your drive bays, these cards are almost a foot long.  Also, be careful in there.  Shut the computer off and unplug it first and don't touch shit you don't have to.

i have enough space for inserting 2 of these cards. can you direct me to a highly reputable seller of these cards?

Title: Re: Increasing Mining
Post by: jojo69 on September 18, 2012, 04:13:16 AM
well, there is always newegg.com

but seriously, most people are dumping GPUs for ASICs now so there are tons of cards cheap in the marketplace forum

awesome. i get my financial aide check soon so i'll be putting 500 USD and exchanging for BTC. anyway you'll give me a loan of a couple BTC? honestly, i wanna put it in .08/share BLTSE stock and let it sit for a month. whatever you loan, i will pay back in double (up to 5BTC) in 30 days time of transaction.
