I know that will be enough to run my site but I am not quite sure how well the OS itself will run with just 1gb of RAM.

If you'd like to connect via RDP you'll need Windows Server 2008 R2, Thus you'll have to get a KVM Plan. However if you'd like to run a Linux VPS, You can use OpenVZ then connect via Putty.
