Title: What do I do with a wallet.dat?
Post by: WorldOfBitcoin on September 20, 2012, 07:32:45 PM
trying to figure out how to import a wallet from a backup made directly from the client. A wallet.dat

I dont see any way to import it in the main client.

Ive poked around and tried to install pywallet but I cant find a .exe

I tryed to import it into blockchain.info but there isnt a tab that lets me select the file. It wants me to copy and paste it in but when I open it in notepad is all gibberish.

just put wallet.dat into your bitcoin folder and start up bitcoin-qt

It should find the wallet then, if not start bitcoin-qt with the -rescan option

You could import it to MtGox using their API.

But, go here and read:

and
https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Securing_your_wallet#Restore

Or:

Basically, copy-paste

Note: if you remove wallet.dat and then you start the bitcoin client it will create a new one. So pay attention to not confuse your wallet.dat with your btc with the new one wich is empty  :)
